    Shin Splints?

Just wondering if anyone has suffered with these before.
It's my belief that I 'may' be suffering with Shin splints.
I've recently started netball after years away from team sports, and am finding that my shins are quite painful whilst I am running, and also for a period afterwards.
I've just bought myself some new shoes, and am going to book in for weekly massages with a local lady, but was wondering what else I can do? Who do I actually go and see to get diagnosed? Just to my GP and then no doubt onto someone else, or do I start with a physio or podiatrist?

Does anyone know any great exercises or stretches to help at all?
I find after a few days of no running, my shins feel perfectly fine again, and strength training doesn't seem to worry them at all... it's the running that I am doing during netball training that is the killer.

it could be your body adjusting to the new shoes - esp if the old ones are really really worn or if it has been a while since you got new shoes. There are some stretches but most physio's advise rest first to avoid the condition worsening. I was told I was at risk for a more serious fracture if I'd continued (but mine were bad and I have a tendency to ignore medical advice and keep going ... so maybe I'm not the best person to listen to! ).

Who to see? Just book in with a physio straight off. They can treat you and diagnose you. You don't need a referral and it will be partially covered by your health insurance if you have extra's cover. They can also demonstrate different stretches for you so you can find the one that best suits you.

HTH and hope they heal soon - nothing worse than being injured!

Thanks MG. I will call my physio tomorrow.
I haven't tried the new shoes yet... I've been wearing the old shoes while having the problem, so will see how the new pair go at training on Thursday.
Did you have to give up sport altogether? I would be distraught if I had to give up netball so early in the season... first game is this week! ($200 worth of fees that I can't get back aswell).

Has anyone else had experience with shin splints?

Totally agree to go see a physio as they will help with this problem and will give you specific stretches for your preferred exercise to prevent problems later too. I had shin splints from jogging even though I was wearing proper jogging shoes, but it turned out that I had flattened feet and needed insoles. I also had other foot problems that this sorted out. You could need the same thing and if you have incorrect foot position you will also get more knee, ankle problems etc as the whole alignment is out.
Hope this helps. Good luck with the physio!

nope - didn't have to give up at all! I was just suppose to modify my activity for a couple of weeks. No running for two weeks were my orders... which I ignored. Got way worse and I couldn't run for about a month because of the pain. After that, I followed orders (strict stretching regime) and didn't have any more shin splint issues!

I had shin splints from playing soccer. I got rid of mine the hard way.. one of the coaches "stripped" them for me.. basically rubbed his thumb down each side of the muscle to strip it away from the bone - i bruised up a bit but after a week I was fone and I have never had them back.

He explained them to me as the muscles / tendans have attached to the bone where they should not and thats why they hurt.

A physio may be more gentle! You can also do hot pack, cold pack and keep going for 20 mins at a time.

I was going to say, netball is a sport that is hard on ankles, shins, knees and hips. It may just be your body adjusting to different exercises.
Be sure to warm up well and cool down
