Mastitis and Augmentin ABs - how many days

    Hi ladies

I am on day 5 of Augmentin Duo Forte antibiotics. They were prescribed by a random after hours Dr who paid a visit at 3am on Easter Saturday!

The tabs are HUGE, I have to take 1 tab twice a day. The Dr prescribed a 5 day course and gave me 1 repeat. In our sleepy haze, DP and I are both pretty sure he said "take the repeat if you feel you need it". However a few things I've read refer to treatment for mastitis being typically over 10 days. DP is getting the prescription filled but I don't want to take them if I don't need to.. but don't want to not take them if I should!

Has anybody taken the same ABs and could share their experience?

    Thanks

sorry Ali, i didn't have those particular ABs.
i did, however, take a course that went for 10 days.

Has the mastitis cleared up yet?

I would be basing this decision on two things - did the mastitis clear up readily within a couple of days or did it linger a bit, and also - is this one in a series of mastitis episodes? For a once-off that responded quickly, I would just take the one course. If it took several days to improve or it's part of a repeated pattern of mastitis I would take the extra course.

You could of course take the middle road, finish after the one course then keep the script and use it if you have a repeat episode in the near future.

Hi Ginger - thanks for replying to share your experience. Yep the mastitis has cleared up thanks for asking!

Marydean - thanks for your advice, I completely agreed with it and on that basis just put the repeat tabs in the cupboard in case of emergency

i think that's a good idea. it you feel it coming on again then get in the shower and massage it with an electric toothbrush and start taking the ABs again.

I always filled my repeat prescription so that I could keep it in the cupboard. But I was unfortunate and suffered from mastitis multiple times for no apparent reason. It was actually my GP who recommended I keep some at home!

I was usually better very quickly and never needed more than one course with any bout.

Glad you're feeling better hun and I hope you have no need for the other tabs EVER!
