    Fine motor skills issues

    HI All,

DD is 2 years old but i found her fine motor skills is not that developed and am wondering if it is normal?

She cannot seem to twist open a cap on a drink bottle for example and with putting shapes into the correct hole is a hit and miss and is like she cannot twist her wrist that much?

Also, when i tell her to show me 2 (rabbit ears with her fingers) she cannot do that too.

    Is this normal?

    Thanks

What does your health nurse say?
DS was able to do the shapes at 2, but Im not sure about the twisting or the numbers.
DO you mean she can work out how to hold up 2 fingers, or shes not associating 2 fingers with the number two - cos that can be much later?

If you are worried you could take to your GP about the possiblity of seeing an occupational therpaist who works with kids - you might even be able to do this for free thru your public hospital - mine has this service.

I would say that if there is no progression over the next 8 months revisit the question. Iventure to suggest your DD is in the normal range. At this stage there is still a lot of gross motor skill development happening and exploring the way their bodies move ,much more than how to manipulate trickier things

If it has not been raised with you by your MCHN, or GP, then it is possible that she is still within normal boundaries, but if you feel that there could be an issue, either take her to someone and specifically to ask about it or like Maya said, revisit it in a few months. What you can do at home with her is things that will help her development in this area. Things like the puzzles, and playing with playdough, painting and drawing etc and even craft activities where she has to crumple, cut or tear paper will all help.
