I was only a part time baby wearer with DD - generally would alternate with the pram and the sling when we were out (most shopping trips, we'd do both) and then use it when she was really unsettled at home. With DS, I've been wearing him alot more just round the house, and when we're out (although I need to get some use out of the exppy double pram I insisted we needed because it was pretty ). its been great for when he's unsettled and DD needs attention or there's jobs that need doing.
So out of curiosity:
how much of the day do you wear them?
was is just when they were newborns or are you still wearing older babies?
do they have the majoirty of their sleeps in the sling? If so, how do they go when they are older in sleeping in a cot, pram, bed etc? Or do you move them once they are asleep? I'm happy to wear DS now when he's unsettled/sleeping, but I don't want to make him reliant on being in the sling - i want a bit of the day when I don't have a baby or toddler attached to me!
how do you cook with them in it? I'm worried that I'll end up burning DS! Similarly, do hot cups of tea go out the window?
Hi ,
I'm new to this forum - I don't have any answers to your questions I'm just also wanting to know about baby wearing. I have a sleepywrap and DS seems to hate it. Every time I put him in it he fusses and cries. What's worse is he seems to be always looking for a feed, but I didn't get any milk, so not BF and so I tend to get a bit upset that I can't accomodate him, which probably makes it worse.
The only time I use the wrap is when I go out. I'm mystified how it works wearing him around the house - I can't seem to get anything done if I do. Also worried about hot cuppa and the like. Also we get really overheated and DS gets a heat rash if I wear him for very long (QLD weather).
I am a baby wearer and even more so with DD2. She has always been one to be rocked to sleep but she started to get really heavy and was hurting our shoulders we had to rock her to sleep in the bjorn. When she is fully asleep, we are able to transfer her to the cot without much of a drama. Only problem is now that she is 9 months and almost 10kg she is too heavy for the recommended weight of the bjorn
If she is unsettled and I need to cook something I get so worried because she grabs at everything. She is normally ok to sit in the highchair and watch me.
Both DD's love going out and about in the double pram.
Hot cups of tea is a thing of the past I have to grab mine as soon as missy is in her cot fast asleep. I swear DD1 knew when I was having morning/afternoon tea and she would wake up.
DS is nearly 2 and a half and is still worn frequently when out. Although I did have to stop for a while because my hips have been causing problems with this pregnancy, but now I've been doing physio and they've improved I can wear him comfortable as long as I tie (or buckle) above the bump.
We rarely wear at home these days because he will quite happily play independently if I need to get things done. But for quite a long time he was worn for a large proportion of the day. He would be carried to sleep if he was unable to fall asleep whilst feeding. If we were home I would put him down once asleep, but it did depend upon the day. If he had fallen asleep with difficulty then I would often let him sleep so that he didn't wake when being put down, other days he could be put down easily. Every now and then I will still carry him to sleep if he is not falling asleep any other way, or is sick. I would frequently wear him whilst cooking dinner as it kept him occupied and happy. And we've always worn whilst out in preference to using a pram. We do use one occasionally, and more so since I've been pregnant, but I prefer the contact of wearing him, I can't interact much with him when he's facing away from me in a stroller.
Hot cups of tea have only now re-entered my life in a significant way - I'm now quite used to drinking tepid tea.
Goodymel - Welcome! I'm also in North Qld, and it is possible to wear frequently in the heat - it just depends on what carriers you use. Unless I'm in air-conditioning I tend to use wraps and carriers that are suited for heat and humidity, and will dress my DS as sparsely as possible - usually just in a nappy. My DS is also predisposed to heat-rash but I have not noticed that wearing has any effect on it as I have chosen carriers that allow maximum air-flow. In fact, he gets worse heat-rash when in the pram, and especially in the car seat!
Tinsel - as long as you don't mind upgrading - your problem re: the bjorn is easily solved if you do want to keep wearing your DD! There are a lot of carriers that a better suited to older babies/toddlers.
I really only use mine for doing the vaccumming! But it has been a lifesaver for that, she used to cry uncontrollably as soon as the vaccum went on, now she has even fallen asleep! And sometimes hanging out/bringing in washing and watering the garden. I've only had it for a few months so haven't worn it out yet, but will definitely take it when we go to visit my parents as they live on a farm, so not pram friendly terrain!
