Finger Foods for 6.5month old? Ideas needed

Up until recently DD was quite happy to eat puree's which i fed to her, she loved them HOWEVER in the last week DD refuses to eat them unless she is holding the spoon.
Most times she gets half of the food in her mouth and the other half in her hair, behind her ears etc etc its all very cute but very messy too!

I am looking for foods which i can give her that are safe for her to hold and feed to herself (worried about choking) . I have tried her on pasta shells (can she choke on this?) , cheese, banana, bread but am out of ideas of what i can give her which will be safe.

She also eats arrowroot biscuits with no dramas and has never choked.

Tonight once again the puree was refused but she was happy to eat my garlic bread ( i broke little pieces for her) and fried chips (squeezed out the potato for her and put it straight into her mouth with my fingers) i know this is unhealthy for her but i was interested to see what her reaction would be.

So, if anyone has the time to just quickly let me know what foods they would give to a 6.5month old i would be so happy!

    Thanks

Have you looked into baby led solids? Maybe you guys should give it a go?
    I'll find you some info

ETA, sorry, you did post in the BLS section

You could try cooked broccoli or cauliflower florrets, cooked carrot sticks, capsicum. Anything really.
My DS ate swirly pasta, chips, potato, bread, fruits, vege's. Almost everything we ate, he ate.

Just give her the food & she'll hold it & eat it. Don't worry about breaking it up or mashing it. She'll work it out. Just make sure she can get hold of it

Dido - i know what you mean - even if you are doing BLS there are some times when you just can't have the mess or want a quicker snack. My son enjoys:
cruskits (plain or with marmite / hummus / butter),
rice cakes (snap them in half, plain or with peanut butter),
slices of apple (he loves the crunching and sucking the juice out even if he doesn't eat that much of it),
    cooked carrot sticks,
tinned pears or peaches (i have found if i dry the juice off the outside a bit its easier for him to hold).
I hope that gives you a few ideas to start with

My DS was exactly the same and I completely understand how tricky it can be to find things to give them. Some things that I find good are
    - steamed veggies
    - sausages (I cut them in half and into little sticks so he can hold them)
    - sandwiches (cream cheese, avocado etc are great cos you can slip in some tuna or something and squish them together)
    - strawberries and bananas cut into little pieces

I wouldn't worry too much about the fat content of foods you are giving her at this stage, fats (including saturated fats like those found in dairy and yes hot chips) are really important for brain development in the first two years.

    Hi Dido!

My DD is 6.5 months as well and we have been going with BLS. I am not as adventurous as I would like but DD is very excited about everything. I dont know if any or all of these things are technically ok but we have tried the following, maybe some of these foods are things you think might work for you?
    Broccoli- steamed
    Green beans- blanched
    Baby corn- blanched
    Pumpkin- steamed or roasted
    Capsicum- raw or roasted
    Toast with banana or avocado
    Asparagus spears
    Banana
    Avocado
    Lamb cutlets (DDs favourite atm)
    Yoghurt
    Apple
    Zucchini- roasted or steamed
    Carrot- roasted or steamed
Noodles- although these just got wrapped around her arm like a bangle
    Potato- roasted

I cut everything into 'fingers' and DD is quite excited about her 'chips' atm as well. I know what yo mean about the choking, I regularly have to watch for a second and be sure DD isnt just gagging. On about the 3rd day after we started solids DD was choking on everything and every food trial ended with me in a panic. It was just horrible but a few days later she rarely gags.

Hope this helps and good luck with it!

    Hi Dido,

You've already been given some great suggestions that cover off most of the things we offer. My latest discovery is mixing natural yoghurt with a tiny bit of fruit juice or some fruit purée and then making ice lollies (I know this is the uk term and don't know what the Aussie one is) from it. I managed to get a set for making half portion ones which are perfect without too much waste, and they go down a treat, especially when teeth are causing issues
