Has anyone done a Group Self Build?

Would love to hear all about it.
I desperately want a house soon... doesn't have to be new, but this is an option we may consider if it ticks enough boxes.

A friend did this in Wangaratta was a great thing for them, they loved it got house they wanted! They had no kids but she was preg with there first so in turn her DH put in more hours as she couldnt as she was very ill.

They sold house about 3 yrs later and made a great profit.

Sure from what little I know, it's where approx 12 families work 20 hours a week (mainly weekends) building a group of homes for each other. You don't need much (if any) of a deposit, the overall cost is less, and the goveerment (I think) lends you the money for fees, land and materials required to build that you pay back once you move into your home (max 14 months), with a long term home loan from the bank.

I think that's it in a paragraph, but I don't know alot about it just yet... you can take a squizz at this site:

Never done it, but would LOVE to hear your adventures if you do get involved with one of these =)

They are quite astounding, and really good for building up neighbourly relationships and a real sense of community. Also, many works that you can't actually perform for yourself are a lot cheaper with these as they are so close together - ie, concrete slab pouring. Where you pay a massive premium just to have the concretors show up on site, you only pay that premium once and pour multiple slabs. Massive savings. Works with many of the trades. So you end up with a beautiful house for basically the cost of the land + supplies, very little of the costs of having it built. BRILLIANT idea.
