Hi all,
We have been using the Amby hammock since DD was born. She's mostly a good sleeper, although she doesn't like leaving the party. (A bit like me, really.)
DD is now nearly six months and about 6.5 kg. The Amby website says babies can use the hammock up to 11 kg or until they can get up on all fours. I've been watching her closely and each week I think it's time to move her into a cot but it's just so easy to rock the hammock when she's unsettled. DP just swings a leg out over the side of the bed and gives it a bit of a push on the odd occasion when she cries in the night. However, in the last few days she's been arching her back and turning onto her side in the hammock. Once I put a dummy in her mouth she usually flops back onto her back.
We are due to move to Singapore at the end of the week. I first thought we'd take the portacot and use that until our stuff arrives in a few weeks time. I thought we'd start using the cot this week to "train" her. But we've had a bit of an unsettled week. She's teething, I think, and it's just so easy to stand by the hammock and rock her. She will settle there but not in my arms.
Does anyone have any advice? Any guestimate of when the arched rolling onto the back could turn into a dangerous trying to get up on all fours in the hammock? She's not showing much interest in getting up on all fours during the day. She can't sit unsupported yet, either. And she's not really left alone in the hammock. In Singapore we'll be in a hotel room and DP will be there with her all the time. Maybe I'm just worrying a bit too much over this.
Thanks in advance.
My dd slept in an amby hamock from 8 weeks till around 10 months from memory, out of the hamock she could sit and crawl but couldn't in the hamock, then she learnt to roll over in it and that is when i took her out. She actually used to arch her back and then side sleep from around 4 months but didn't go any further till around 10months.
Hey there,
I am new BB member,
My DD was in the Amby until 9 months as we were moving interstate and didn't want to buy a cot before the move. She learnt to crawl at 7months. I think it would be really hard for a littlie to get out as it just moves when they move. We never doubted the safety but for the last week or two she seemed annoyed that she was stuck in there and I wanted her to be able to play in a cot.
My DS is 6 weeks old and in the Amby although he vomits a lot when he lays on his back so it looks like it might not be the right bed for him. Which is soooo sad, I LOVE it, so easy to settle them, you don't really even have to wake up.
Hope that helps
Thanks for the replies.
I guess I'm still a little freaked out by the Amby recall in the U.S. Really, when I read my question I see I answered it myself. She won't be unsupervised in there so there's no problem.
Thanks again. I love the hammock and DD looks sooooo cute in there, with her little arms flung up and her legs all froggy and relaxed.
If it makes you feel a bit better, we used our Amby for DS1 until he was 23 months old! He was a very active boy and never once rolled over in it or tried to get out.
DD is 8 months old (and super-active) and still sleeps in it for her day naps. At night she sleeps in her cot (she loves to be able to move around throughout the night). She went through a phase where she did what your DD does - arched her back and went onto her side. She did this for a couple of months, but never actually rolled over. She has been up on her hand and knees since 5 months of age so I don't think that automatically means they will do that in the hammock. I don't know how they could TBH!
I really wouldn't change anything if you are about to move, it's nice for bub to have a familiar sleeping place when you are in a different location.
