Things like bank statements, bills, payslips etc.
I want to try and cull as much crap as i can from my study so i don't have to move it all so have the shredder ready to go... is there a time period I should keep this stuff for?
Payslips I don't really keep, not unless I think the employer might be a bit dodgy on payments. If you do want to keep them, then 1 year would be enough as you get a payment summary at the end of the financial year.
Anything used to compile tax returns I keep about 7 years, think it may have dropped to 5 and even 2 with some returns. Once the tax return it complete I put it all in a big envelope, write the year on it and put aside. It does not take up much room.
I keep bills for a year or 2. I have had to go back and check old bills for double payments etc, so I don't like to turf them straight away.
Superannuation I just keep the last statement from them. They send way to much paperwork over the year.
I do pretty much the same as Astrid. I have got bank statements that are for around 6 -12 months, but recently decided to keep it to around 6 months worth of them as you can easily access them online (if you do online banking anyway) and print them off should you need them
I asked this a while ago when doing a big cull. I'll see if I can find it.
Basically we have online payslips and everything is accessible online so I only keep disputed bills, mortgage stuff, super, car regos etc, and tax stuff gets filed in a envelope like Astrid said for each of us every year.
