Bubby cranky, feeding all day, hasn't had her usual sleep - I just can't settle her without the boob!! I think that she has bad wind, lots of smelly farts and nappies.
Yesterday was exactly like this for me My advice is if boob works, embrace it. Get yourself a big drink, snacks, the tv remote and a good book and feed her until she's had enough. when she's finished just cuddle etc until she wants more and just keep reminding yourself tomorrow will be better.
About the wind, have you got something like gripe water or infacol? i find those help bubs a bit.
Yeah, i took her to the shop earlier in her pram and got some of that Infant Friend (like gripe water I think), seems to have helped a little. She is napping just now but I know that she'll wake really soon.
its hard some days isn't it. Like Little Bear said, go with what she wants and if thats boob, then just get yourself comfy! It seems hard in the early days when sometimes you don't seem to get off the couch but it does settle down.
Also, like Jennifer13 said, the sling could be a lifesaver too - most days, DS sleeps in teh sling, so I can still do stuff.
Ooooh, Kate, you have had your baby! (I haven't looked around the traps in a while obviously!) CONGRATULATIONS!!!
Sue, congrats to you too on your beautiful little bubba
Some days are just like that, hey. Great advice you've been given - celebrate that boob! You can't use it too much. And slings are wonderful too.
Just as an aside, does your bub have contact with older kids? Wondering about the stinky farts... Do they smell similar to breastmilk? (Poo as well?) I don't want to alarm you cause it could just be that bubs is 3 weeks old and behaving EXACTLY like a 3-week-old should, but I know that around these parts there's been a lot of gastro about the place. If her poos STINK to high heaven and the farts too (and not like breastmilk) then it could be she's got tummy pains. You just need to keep the breastmilk coming and make sure there are enough wet nappies and it will right itself anyway, but it's a possibility...
Take care and enjoy that sweet little bubba.
I did wonder about an upset tummy - she's had no contact with other kids but we were at the Drs yesterday and there were loads of kids sniffing and snorting in there..... maybe one of them had something?
I have also had a look at my diet and am going to cut out a few things to see if that helps. I have been having way too much chocolate the past few days (due to lack of being able to get the time to make myself something decent to eat - for shame)
Little one is asleep just now and about to get up and have a bath and some more boobie.
he he, I was going to say check your diet, I could see in my bub the day after I had just way too much chocolate...
With a newborn, and you only have one i agree give her what she wants, but I found with ds (#1) he did comfort suck, I could tell because he would continue to suck even if there was no milk, and when the milk wasn't filling his mouth, my nipples would get itchy, 'cause it was just saliva iykwim. I had to use other methods to get him to sleep for more than half hour at a time or he would have snacks all day.
babies also want to suck when they have pain because the feeding is pleasureable and they are trying to relieve the pain.
some of the bubrping techniques I have learnt are
seated position and rubbing back.
from same position gentle rocking back and forward/side to side
quite high over shoulder and firm rubbing. (in this position bubs may stiffen legs and back and raise head if they have pain)
over one or both knees on tummy, rubbing back.
and it doesn't matter if they have a little spew if it means they have no pain, and if they do and your worried about how much they are getting, offer some more.
if your worried, as you mentioned you can change your diet, and as long as it's ballanced it not going to hurt anyone.
but you can also go to your mchn or try the aba for some support .
I know how hard it can get, sometimes it feels like u have ur boob out all day.. but they arent like that forever, they have days good and bad.
wind effected my bub bad, we use infants friend after some feeds and once she was 1 month old we introduced infacol before feeds works like a charm.
U are doing a great job keep it up
