I have a problem with one of my nipples. When my 9m old DD is Latching/feeding is toe curling agony! And it's only my right one...
I've been expressing electronically alot for the last three weeks... I don't knot if that has caused it? ! ?
It's not itchy or red... theres not pain until she latches on and starts feeding... She has no problem feeding from that side, (and there is no obvious signs of thrush in her mouth either) I have to count sheep or distract just to get throuh the feed...
That sounds very painful hun It doesn't sound like thrush, but more like she is having attaching on the one side. This can be common as often mums have nipples that point in different directions, or babies can have more difficulty on one side, especially if they have had a difficult birth.
Some mums find it helps to stand topless in front of the mirror, and have a look at where the nipple is pointing. This can give you a clue as to how to change your position on that side to stop the pain. It might be that you need to turn her a bit to make sure that she is close enough, and that her chin is nicely on your breast. If you watch her feed in front, her nose should be well away from your breast. Sometimes different holds can help in this case, such as the football hold, or having the baby more vertical or diagonal rather than horizontal.
The ABA helpline on 1800 mum 2 mum (1800 686 2 686) can give you more suggestions for improving the positioning - you can call 24 hours, 7 days. Or would you consider seeing an LC at all to get some assistance with positioning and attachment on that side? Mums often find this money well spent.
All the very best hun. You are doing so well so far. I really hope that you are able to feed pain-free shortly.
Thanks MR!
I had a really good look at the booby and found the cause, DD has her teeth now, and it seems that one of the times she has biten down, it caused a breakage on my boob :-( Just a small tear, but OMG its painful!
