I'm concerned my 2 month old baby gaining too much weight and is overweight. He just had his 8 week check up and weighs 8.4kg and his length is 66cm. He was a big boy born weighing 4.6kg. He exclusively breastfed and only feeds on average every 3 to 4 hours (he has about 8 feeds a day). I would not even consider him a good feeder as he only sucks for a few minutes and sometimes he even refuses feeds. I wondering if any else had a baby gain so much weight in these early months?
Both my boys were over 4.6kg at birth (just) but werent 8.4 in 2 months.
I think there was someone though who's bub was 9hg at their 3 months check - I just dont know.
Other than them thinking you're giving solids to a 2 months old Im not sure what they're worried about. Has the CHN given you any indication of cause for concern?
my ds1 was 10kg at 4 months old.he was 4.3 at birth. he was only breastfed as well and i started solids at 3 months old. he completely slowed down at that stage and stayed 10kg for ages. he was 11kg by 12 months old. nothing to worry bout darl. go see a paed if ur really worried.
If he's exclusively breastfed then I don't see how he could be overweight... He is very tall for his age, also, so no doubt that is a contributing factor - might want to consider weight to height ratio here, rather than just looking at his weight.
The community health nurse who checked him out, said he was doing beautifully and he is just a big baby boy. I was just concerned because he is so, so, much bigger than all the other babies in my mother's group and he is alot younger than most of them. He also weighs 2kgs heavier than my daughter did at this time and she too was a big baby at birth. He is also way off the growth charts, which is was making me worry.
If you're really worried, then seeing a pead for reassurance might be a good idea.
It really sounds to me like he's doing wondefully and is just a big boy, as your nurse says.
All babies are so different in the way they grow. My DS was 4.3kg at birth, but grew very slowly and is quite a small, slight thing.
I know someone who's baby was born about 4.8kg and has always been massive. He's tall and heavy, like your boy. But perfectly healthy.
My bub was a weeny little one, but SIL has a little boy who at 7 weeks was 7.55kg, and he was averaging 600grams a week, fully BF'd and he is in size 0 as he is quite long as well. They did see a Paed about a week ago and he was not concerned at all. So he is a little smaller, but will probably be pretty close in size by the time 8 weeks hits
He will start to level out with his weight, and moreso when he starts moving, rolling cralwing etc.
You have some fabulous boobie milk
And if you feel too concerned perhaps see your GP or Paed to get confirmation for yourself
I wouldnt be concerned sounds like ur doing an awesome job and ur bub is growing beautifully. You bub was born 4.6 and is now 8.4...in which he hasn't doubled his weight as yet...to put it into persepctive my bub was born 2.795kg 3rd % and was 5.6kg almost 90% by 8 weeks meaning she doubled her weight, her length had also gone from 48cm to 58. She also only fed every 3-4 hrs breastfed exclusively and started sleeping thru the night ie 12 hrs by 6 weeks - meaning she had only 5-6 feeds by 6 weeks. She was born so small and was huge before I blinked.
My paed from RPA and clinic said wow i have king island cream in my boobs. Just take it as a compliment i always did. Bub did start to slow down her growth from 4-6mths and the other little breastfed bubs in her clinic seemed to catch up although she is still the biggest. At 7 months she is now 8.5kg around 75%. I say good on you your doing a fanatastic job and it is very normal for breastfed infants to beef up. The paed says they usually beef up more than formula fed babies at the beginning. I wouldnt be concerned, it happened to all of my breastfed mothers in my mothers group...they all piled on the weight. Its a great healthy sign. Good job mum.
