seems to stop breathing while asleep

ok so I mostly co-sleep with DS and have noticed that sometimes he seems to take a breath and then stops. At first I was so freaked that I would touch him and he would start breathing then I would see if he did himself and kept thinking ok he is going to breath (I never counted cause I figured he would start) and now I have started counting. It is like he will stop breathing for about 5 secs... which doesn't sound much but believe me it feels like an eternity.

Is it normal? should I see a doctor? I just don't know what to think

I would def see a doctor...my DS was diagnosed(sp?) with obstructive sleep apnea at age 2 he had to have his tonsils and adnoids out.
We had to have a sleep study done first where we spent the night in the hospital sleep clinic.
DS used to do what you are describing its quite scary listening to them

My DS does the same, docs ruled out adenoids/tonsils and may have to remove them at age 3. Hubby had the adenoids taken out too so it is heridetary.

I have the same advise as the ladies above. Def go to the doc and ask for a referal for a sleep study to be done.
I have had a couple of friends with similar issues. One of them was told the results of the sleep study where fine and as long as her son was acting normally the next day he and wasn't over tired then he wasn't being affected by it (her was older -about 8) but the other family (like was mentioned above) had to have their daughters tonsils/adenoids taken out to stop it.

    Good luck
