Hi
Just wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction regarding a VBAC in SA? eg which hospitals accept them, Ob's or IM's? Hospital or home? My first delivery ended with an epi and a third degree tear and the next two deliveries were c-sections, would anyone know the chances of being accepted as a candidate for a VBAC or the success rate after the third degree tear or does that not make any difference?
Thanks in advance
There is a fantastic independant Midwife in SA by the name of Lisa Barrett. She is an amazing advocate for mothers. She writes a blog called homebirth: A midwife mutiny. you can find her here Homebirth: Midwife Mutiny in South Australia If she can't help you she will no doubt know someone who can.
Take your next birth into your own hands and give her a call. Believe in your body and go for the birth that you want.
I would have to second getting in touch with Lisa Barrett! Believe it or not, my MCHN actually told me all about her when we were discussing TTC #2 and I mentioned how disappointed I was about having a csect last time.
What little research I have done, was not favourable in regards to VBACing at most public hospitals, success rates (where available! ) were pretty dismal.
Private hospitals I havent been able to find any figures so cant help, same with OBs.
I hope you get the birth you are hoping for xx
Your best chance to achieve a VBAC would be to birth at home with an Independent Midwife. The previous posts have already recommended some names but also get in touch with CARES-SA and the Homebirth Network in SA, great networks to help you work through your options. You can VBAC through midwifery group practice at Women's & Childrens but not at Flinders Medical Centre. At Flinders you can only go through the normal labour & delivery ward. Statistically your chances aren't great in the public hossy's & very dismal in private hopsitals with OBs. I'm at a point where I'm still tossing up what to do & very seriously thinking about birthing at home. I just don't trust the hospital system to respect my wishes. And continuity of care with an IM would have to be the gold standard in my opinion. Good luck. You'll find lots of support here on BB.
Thanks so much for all your replies, was great to hear what you all have to say. First of all I had no idea Dr Klomp did VBAC's! That's great news to me as Mt Barker is my closest birthing hospital and he was involved in my first delivery. Murray Bridge is worth looking into aswell by the sounds of things. I'm too far away from WCH to be accepted into their study unfortunately. I will definately do some research in regards to IM's... any idea on how much they cost? I'm a little sceptical on the idea of a homebirth due to my previous 3rd degree tear, but I'm sure doctors can advise me on the chances of that happening again. It's all beginning to be a little clearer in my head now :-) Good luck to those of you who are attemting your VBAC's, I hope all your dreams come true xo
