    Help from Midwives needed please

I need to do a inclass lab report this week and i have choosen to do mine on reflexes
and i need two applications on reflexes to midwifery!

Now apart from the obvious newborn tests i can't think of anything or any time a midwife would test either the mothers or baby's reflexes???

Is someone able to shed some light at all??

    Thankyou muchly

Reflexes are checked on the mum with Pre Eclampsia as brisk reflexes can be a sign.

    Google clonus

With baby can check re eye relex and babinski reflex

Some other baby reflexes you may want to consider are
    Traction
    Stepping
    Galant
    Moro
    Grasp
    Gag
    Rooting
    Sucking

    Thanks feeb!

    thats a great help!

Ive got the babinski reflex (love that word) :-)

    Thanks Alan

Ive got all them also except for traction!

Now am i right in saying all those infant reflexes should dissapear by12mths?

How often are reflexes tested? is it only once bub is born?

So im hoping that if i talk about the reflexes in general in the newborn

and than the Clonus in a pregnant woman that should be enough?

Another question tho - what are some causes of abnormal reflexes in a newborn besides possible neurological problems, Spinal problems etc?

Yes they would all disappear by about 12 months but some would disappear before others.
Abnormal results would in the main be caused by a neurological defect however; I would imagine that some deformities could produce some abnormal reflexes and I suppose pain could also influence the results.
Normally these tests would be performed soon after birth and sometimes just before discharge
