Wondering if anyone else has had this problem...
When I had an FET the other day the it took ages as the dr couldn't 'find a way through' because it seems I have a twisted cervix. After telling me this only happened once or twice a year with patients, Dr told me not to worry, no big deal. Of course I looked it up later, and nothing that I found reassured me at all! All the excess prodding and poking can't be good - Any advice?
I too have a twisted cervix. Underwent 3 unsuccessful IUIs. All three were difficult because my cervix has a nice 90 deg twist going on. hubby and i want to start ivf, but first we are cautiously trying out doctors to see if they can navigate my cervix. in total, i've had 2 HSGs, 3 IUIs, and 2 trial attempts at threading a catheter thru my cervix. The results: 1 radiologist was able to thread the catheter thru, pain-free, for a successful HSG, 1 RE was able to easily thread the catheter (also pain-free) thru but IUI failed, the RE who did the 3rd IUI drew blood and caused excruciating pain because he forced the fattest and stiffest catheter in existence thru my cervix. Afterward, he recommended I undergo zift rather than IVF. That was July 2010. Since July, I've consulted with another RE. A mock transfer is scheduled for October 18th (before starting the drugs), if he can't do it we just may choose to do zift because it's really starting to get hopeless. we live in los angeles, so there are loads of reproductive endrocrinologists. ttc for almost 2 years now. We've seen 5 REs and i'm worried that navigating a twisted cervix is not consistently possible.
Hope you're still an active member, would like to chat with you more. Haven't come across anyone with a similar story. do you also have unexplained fertility?
Hi Angela - I'm still here My DH has poor sperm which is why we've gone the IVF route. Sorry you're in a similar situation with the cervix - it's really unpleasant!
I've found that my transfers have been getting progressively more difficult. The first couple were just long, then it became uncomfortable, and I've been given local anaesthetic for the most recent two. For my next one (about 3 weeks away) my fs has recommended a sleeping tablet before the transfer. I don't think it's the healthiest thing to do, but my last one was pretty traumatic and to be honest I'm really not looking forward to doing it again.
I don't know much about zift - is it similar to gift? I was looking into that as an alternative to transfers, but since we require icsi as well it isn't really suitable for us.
I have a few blasties in the fridge so I'll be continuing to transfer them - hopefully one takes soon - My main concern with their survival is the amount of time it takes from when they come out of the lab to when they are transferred. Usually they'll bring out the embryo as the fs gets the catheter ready. My last one got sent back to the lab because it was taking so long, so for all future transfers I'll be asking that they don't bring it out until the catheter is in place. I definitely understand your worry about getting through.
Sounds like you've been thru a lot yourself. I'm quite concerned about the embryo transfer myself and the dilation technique that has been described to me which is why I think we'll ultimately do ZIFT. it's like gift, but instead of dropping the sperm and egg separately into the tube, they mix the egg and sperm externally (like ivf) and then go in by way of laparascopy and drop the embryo into the fallopian tube. we're also gonna do icsi. wonder why your doc said zift is not for you, maybe he was talking about gift.
good luck with your upcoming procedure. i hope this is the "one" for you. please keep us posted. -A
