I am not currently enrolled, but I have been and have also supervised their students on placement. My experience has been that there is very little support from teachers, and to be honest i have no idea why any of the teachers are even there. They do the face to face classes, and mark assignments, I guess, but outside that, there is nothing. Even trying to contact a specific teacher can take a week of message bank messages, emails and faxes.
Thanks for your input Audax. Honestly I'm not too fussed on teacher support - if they deliver the classes well and are there to answer questions during that time, I'm happy with that!
Can I ask what field you assist in? Just being nosey :-)
I did (read: tried to do) my cert 3 in childrens services through them, it was a traineeship and was done entirely by corrospondance (sp?). So a bit different, but I had a very similar experience to the pp. The teacher was supposed to come out once a month to collect my assessments and go through the next module with me but over a 12month period I saw her twice. Anytime I tried to call I got the message bank and she never called back.
Because of that I had trouble getting another traineeship, apparently it was my fault I didn't finish enough modules in the 12 months and didn't meet the deadlines set out in the initial meeting.
Good luck with it, I hope you have a better experience than I did.
They don't like you calling it TAFE. They're trying to move away from that, and seem to somehow think that makes them classier, more exclusive, and therefore more attractive to international students, who pay better money than us plebs and don't know the difference when the teachers fairly well ignore them through their entire course.
I'm also involved in Children's Services. I was enrolled in an Advanced Diploma there but have pulled out due to the lack of support - I am not giving them my money and getting nothing in return except a bundle of papers they have bought from another institute. I have supervised 5 of their students, and the level of support from staff (for me or for the student) has been dismal for every single one. One of them wasn't even visited by a teacher, and the institute had no plans to send anyone out to see her, until I contacted the head of school and kicked up a fuss. Not really fair for the student - if I'd been a cow and wanted to fail her, I could have, and she wouldn't have been able to do anything about it, because the tafe wouldn't have known any different.
