Smile Tips on weaning bub from being wrapped to sleep please

    Hi ladies,

Well after what seems like a long 8 months Miss Charlotte is starting to sleep much better!!! She has a grobag and is wrapped to go to sleep but I am thinking that she is getting to big and strong to be wrapped all the time!!! BUT I am worried that if I stop wrapping her (have tired a few times and she screams until she is wrapped!) she won't sleep!! Hmm - should I worry that she is still wrapped??? Is it bad for them??? Or should I just keep wrapping?????

Any thoughts or tips would be appreciated!!

    TIA

    Kerry

My philosophy is do what you need to do in order to get them to sleep!

This means that Sam at 18 months old is still sometimes wrapped for his day sleeps. He hasn't needed to be wrapped at night for a long time, but sometimes the only way I can get him to stop moving long enough to fall asleep during the day is to wrap him up.

I've not heard of wrapping past a certain age being harmful to babies - some just seem to need it a lot longer than others. If you are determined to stop, perhaps try wrapping her with one arm out to start with and then progress to two arms out and see how it goes.

Both my munchkins were wrapped until they were about 8 or 9 months old too! Some bubs love the security and some hate it, mine, well they loved it!

My advice would be to take it slowly and wean your little girl off her wrap. If you suddenly just take it away she may feel very "exposed" and this could cause serious sleep issues for you both.

I took my time with both mine. I started by just leaving 1 arm out of the wrap for 3 nights, then the other arm out for 3 nights but still with their bodies wrapped and then make the wrap quite loose for 3 nights and then remove it entirely. This worked for us but keep in mind every bub is different.

It can be very tempting to keep them wrapped when it helps them sleep but at some stage it has to go. Best of luck with this.

I have wrapped all my kids until they were 11 months or so. I still wrap DD for sleep. I never had to wean them from being wrapped, it just kind of happened. They start getting out of their wraps during the night and sleeping without them, until I find that they do go to sleep without them. Though having said that, I think I did have a couple of nights with my older two where I had to lay them on their tummies and pat them on the back to help them settle.

Don't feel bad about wrapping - if it working and your DD likes it then there is nothing wrong with it. Do you know about angel wrapping so that her arms are able to move around inside the wrap? It may be a good step to help her get used to being a bit more free at night. If you need info on angel wrap, I can find the link to the information sheet and PM it to you if you let me know

You could try a woombie, I got one of these for DD when it got too hard to wrap her, google it to see what its about. One thing I found with the woombie is that she could still move enough in it to stand up or if she rolled onto her tummy she could still push up or kneel etc, if that makes sense. The woombie allows them to have the feeling of being wrapped but its not restricitve, its supposed to mimick the womb environment.

......i totally agree. I still wrap DS whom is nearly 13 months. He certainly isnt wrapped when he wakes from his sleep, the wrap is often tossed and forgotton about, but it is defn a cue for him that it is sleep time.

Some babies just seem to like being wrapped just like others hate it. I'm actually starting to suspect that the wrap will only go when Sam stops having day sleeps! I am suddenly wondering if woombies come big enough for my 13kg monster! I at least have some large cheesecloth wraps that my sister-in-law used for her son - I think he was the same as Sam - needed to be wrapped for a very long time!
