Let me start this thread with saying that I feel a little silly asking this but I don't recall my mum using Vicks on me.
DD currently has a cold and I am getting some advice, that I didn't really ask for, that I should be using Vicks on her. I haven't because her cold isn't that bad and I dont think she needs anything at this stage. I have the humidifier if need be. But it did get me thinking that I don't really know when you can start using Vicks on children? And when would you use it?
You can get baby balsam vicks (pink lid) for after 6 months I think it is, maybe 3 months?) Anyway, you can't use normal vicks on babies under 2 - the essential oils are too harsh on their skin.
Use it - it helps immensely!! Rub some on the soles of her feet and put some socks on and you will be amazed
I also sometimes put a bit into the vaporiser about a teaspoon into the full vaporiser to help with their breathing if they're having trouble, but just take notice of it because it could irritate her more, sometimes if I have accidentally oput too much into it or have it on for too long, they kids will cough more because it's irritating them.
I also put a bit of baby balsam onto a hanky and put it near their bed/cot where their head is if I don't put any on thier clothes/feet.
Or you can use Eukey Bear rub... sorry I'm not sure of the spelling! Its a milder form of vics and is gentle on the skin. I used to put vics on a hanky an pop it under their pillow too. Good luck and hope she recovers soon from her cold
We love baby balsam in this house! I find regular vicks way too strong even for me as an adult, so I doubt I'll ever use it on Sam, but the baby balsam is wonderful. I'm tempted to use it on myself some times. Recently when we were all sick we would put the baby balsam on Sam and have him sleep in bed with us - there was a conflict over who got to snuggle him closer to breathe in his baby balsam smell! Until DH snored so badly I gave up and then slept on the lounge for a week!
We use EukyBear Rub...I was using it on #2 last night with croup (lol, I initially typed crap, and yes, croup is pretty crap!). It can help with breathing, I know it clears my nose, and it seemed to help last night. So that made him less distressed and more relaxed, which made it easier for him to breathe.
I tend not to use it often, mostly when they're having trouble breathing and a bit upset by that. Then we blow noses, and use Eukyrub. If nothing else, having it rubbed on their chests is a comforting contrast to being assaulted with tissues all the time.
I was using Vicks on dd when she was 4 months old and my dr told me not to because the camphor in it can cause more breathing problems. Baby balsam is safe to us but personally I can't stand the Rosemary smell...
I love the smell of the Baby Balsam. Poor DS (3.5 mths) has had a stuffy nose for weeks thanks to kindy bugs from DD4 and I've been using it on them both. I'm sure it helps clear their noses up. It can be used from 3 mths old.
