In two weeks DS will be starting an Automotive 1 course which goes for 8 weeks. He was given a form which we need to take into Centrelink, just wondering which payment he would receive and would I need to open a bank account for him. Any information would be great.
If I am to understand the system correctly - if he is still at home under your care and IF he was to get any payment for it you can elect for it to be given to him [if he is 16+] or you [just like FTB]. As he is only 15, the payment I am sure would go to you if there is one.
For eg: Austudy - next year he will be able to claim it as he will be turning 16. You can have it go into your acc OR his.
You get FTB for him until he turns 16. Then you can elect to change it over to YAL (youth allowance) and yes you get it paid unto YOUR account unless you think he can handle the money on his own (always a bad move). It's not Austudy it's YAL and you cease to recieve FTB when you changeover.
That paper you have to hand in wont change anything really, it's just registering that he is doing this course.
Thank you, it was all just confusing because he is not actually doing an apprenticeship, it's only an 8wk course but the school have to un-enroll him then when he returns he needs to enroll again. He was told he needs a Tax File Number also so I'll have to look at that, think it can be done online. Thanks again.
