Baby passport (UK) question for any expats out there????

Hey!!

DH and I are permanent residents here, missy moo was obviously born here 4 months ago. I am sorting her out with a UK passport and am just wondering, do I have to take her passport to the department of immigration to get a PR visa stamped in there? I am on the phone to them just now but am on hold and have been for the past gazillion years (well, it feels like that anyway). Just wondered if anyone has been in this situation and what you did.

DOes she have an Aussie passport? With mine when they had both we just used the UK one to get into UK and Aus one to get into Aus

I'm pretty sure that as she was born here to permanent residents then she has a right to citizenship automatically. So if you are applying for a UK passport then she would be a dual citizen. My son is a little different as he has an aussie dad (I'm British), but I have both UK and Oz passports for him and he is a dual citizen.

Australian citizen by birth

Whether you are an Australian citizen by birth depends on the date of your birth.

Most children born in Australia before 20 August 1986 are Australian citizens by birth unless one parent was entitled to diplomatic privileges or was a consular officer of another country.

Children born after that date are only Australian citizens if at least one parent was an Australian citizen or permanent resident at the time of their birth.

Children born in Australia to parents who are not Australian citizens or permanent residents, automatically acquire Australian citizenship on their 10th birthday if they have lived most of their life in Australia.

We have very lucky kids to be citizens in Australia and the EU!!

We're in the same situation at the moment and I recently looked into it as DD and I just took a trip to visit the rellies on the UK. Your DD is born an Australian citizen and is entitled to both Aussie and UK passports - she would use the Aussie passport leaving and entering Australia and her UK passport in the UK, so there is no need for her UK passport to have details of her Australian status, iykwim? It's the same as if you become citizens and are no longer required to carry an Australian visa in your UK passport.

Incidentally, she also doesn't need a UK passport to travel to the UK - it's a much longer processing time than the Australian one so when we went DD just travelled on her Aus passport as I didn't want to run the risk of complications arising if the UK passport arrived while we were over there, so I decided to just wait until we got back to apply for it.

Wow, guys thank you so much for your help.
I had no idea that missy moo was a citizen and it turns out that because we are PR's - she is a wee Aussie!! YAY! So I am going to get her an Aussie passport to save the hassle of the UK one at the moment (we might be going home in the next month for a brief visit).

Anyone give me a guesstimate of how long the Aussie one takes to come through once the application is submitted?

Provided the information is all supplied, you can get them as short as a week I think, with paying for priority.

Yes the Aussie passport can be pretty quick - we are both British and have PR, when we did our trip back to UK just got DD an Aussie passport, we will get her a British one at some point but they cost a fair bit so will get later on when going to make some use of it.

Can I ask.... were there any issues that you had a different passport to your DD? Like, here or in the UK? Not that there should be, I was just wondering.....

No issues at all she goes through uk queue like us and passport people don't even take a second look.
