Or chocolate sprinkles for the track with white lollies for the lines and green like ZF mentioned would be good then some Matchbox cars on top! Google images is your friend!!! I would do the no#2 and the other thing to do is find a local cake supply shop - you may be able to hire tins and get some advice as well!

can you price the edible icing for on a relatively plain cake, to bring the Cars theme in that you want on his invites?

i just went on ebay and searched disney cars party
came up with a cake topper as first result...
you could do a basic round cake (not too scary) with the topper on it and then create a race track around the bottom if you wanted to...
