I have read that 10 months is too young for babies to self wean but we have been having problems for weeks now and I really think that DS is just not interested in BF'ing anymore other than his morning feed.
He loves his morning feed when I first get him up but any feed after that just ends up in him biting me. I honestly believe that he is trying to tell me that he doesn't want it as he will make a few half hearted sucks then look at me and then very slowly move in to 'nip' me with his teeth.
I have tried; persisting with the feed (just ends up in me being bitten again), terminating the feed and trying again later, changing the location of the feed (laying down in bed, in the rocking chair in his room etc), changing the time of the feed (I was feeding first thing in the morning, before his morning nap, before his afternoon nap and then before bed) the morning feed is fine but I have tried changing the other feeds to after his sleeps, before dinner etc and nothing that I do seems to be making any difference.
I am not worried about him dehydrating as his nappies are wetter than ever now as I am making sure he drinks lots of water. I will offer a feed, he is not interested but if I offer him water he will drink no problem?
I am worried about what he is missing out of in terms of nutrients though from the lack of BM.
He is a fantastic eater, porridge for breakfast, veggies and fruit for lunch (or a sandwich and fruit), meat and veggies for dinner followed by yoghurt and then some fruit. He was born at 4.4kilos and is now over 10kgs so I'm not worried about weight gain but am not sure how worried I should be about the lack of BM? I have spoken to the MCHN a number of times but she keeps telling me not to worry and just keep offering, if he doesn't want it that's fine.
So....I'm looking for some advice...what would you do? Should I think about offering some cows milk now as he will be 1 in 7 weeks or should I try to introduce formula or do I just keep trying to offer BM? I plan to keep the morning feed at least as this is an enjoyable feed for both of us, I had no intention of weaning him yet.
Sorry this is long, if you've got this far and have any advice to share I would appreciate it very much. TIA
Oh hun your doing a great job...maybe he is weaning..all babies wean when they want if allowed and some earlier than others...have you though of expressing and giving it to him in a cup? Or on his porridge? I would offer him formula just Bm...I had started to give DS2 cows milk not much just a little bit and he quiet likes it but he is stil fed to sleep ect. So dont give it often ..sorry thats not much help lol
Keep up his morning feed and enjoy it and just let him do his thing!
Great job hun xxxx
I have never been able to express well, I wish I could as it's a great idea and at least I'd know he was getting some more BM and it would keep my supply up.....in case this is just a short term refusal
I just didn't think that he would wean so early. I will continue offering and see what happens over the next couple of weeks but I might start adding in some cows milk as well, did you water it down to start with?
I am just to lazy to express lol
Um he has had just straight cows milk cause he likes to drink his older brothers lol! the A2 milk is good! But you could scald it maybe? I am not too sure on all the facts for cows milk?
Maybe try expressing again even if its just to give a small cup at night?
Let me know how you go! Great job mumma xxxx
