Port Douglas and surrounds....what's good to do?

DH is taking leave in Jan so thought we'd go up north and see the rainforest, will most likely stay in Port Douglas and rent a car so we can get around. So far we have decided to up to Cape Trib and go on a Barrier reef cruise as we've yet to see it up close. For those who have been or live around there what else can you recommend we do?
Keeping in mind we'll have a 19 month old with us so bungy jumping or scuba diving is kinda out of the question!

We're not really chill out on the beach people and want to make the most of the holiday...we like to get our hands dirty!

Also if anyone can recommend nice accommodation in Port Dougy that would be cool...

so hit me with your suggestions
    thanks

    Hello,

We just went there for our honeymoon - there are lots of family friendly places close to the mainstreet we stayed at the Sheraton which had lots of families too but its about a km out of the main street action.

The Habittat is great, you can feed the kanagroos and birds, Hartleys Croc World, Daintree River Cruises are great you get up close and personal with wild crocs - but safe if you know what I mean

You can do lots or nothing at all and its all lovely!
    Enjoy!
