So proud of our clever dog!

We have a 4 year old Lab, and he is so smart!! (But I'm a little biased lol.)

He can sit, drop, beg, shake hands, and all the rest, but now he's good with doors!

In our old house, we couldn't put a dog door in to the kitchen door due to the type of door, but Zed (the dog) needed to use that door to go out for drinks & toilet stuff. It got a bit annoying in winter when we'd have to go open the door for him every time, wait for him, then shut it when he came back in. So DH taught him to shut the door. Took about 10 minutes, and now whenever he's near a door and we say "shut the door" he nudges it till it clicks then gets so excited that he did it lol.

Now in the new house we have a screen door out back that used to be left open for him, but now needs to be shut due to flies. So DH rigged up a rope on the door, set it so it doesn't latch shut, and in 15 minutes taught Zed to push it open himself, and pull the rope to let himself back in! Again he's so excited when he gets it right, it's adorable

Thanks - though I think he's almost prouder of himself than I am of him! We're lucky he's so motivated by food, we can teach him almost anything with a treat

My dog has barely worked out what his name is! and the puppy isn't much better - he's still confused by the wagging thing at the end of his num.

very smart! Now your DH can teach him to be an assistance dog..lol. Turning on light switches, opening kitchen cupboards and other doors, fetching the newspaper (even a beer for DH..haha).

Lol ss_storm, that's one thing we've joked he could never do! No amount of obedience training has helped us get him to walk properly on a lead. The only way is to have food in your hand and give him some every now and then lol. And he has zero road sense! He would kill a good many blind people as a guide dog I reckon!
