Water mark on timber surface?

Help! Some friends from interstate stayed last night, and I got up this morning to find that one of them had left a wet bottle or similar on top of our vintage record player/stereo unit. And two wet towels The towel area was fine, but where the bottle was was still wet and has left a mark, kind of paler than the rest of the surface.

Is there anything I can do to get rid of this?

How often do you polish? If it's polished wood it will probably vanish over time. If it's varnished I have no idea.
