So I started at the bottom of the food chain many years ago as a check out chick in coles. I worked my backside off in a couple jobs to get the skills and credentials I have now. I am experienced and well skilled. I have an envious customer service record...
but I cant get a job at all.
Heck, even Aldi knocked me back as a check out operator. Feels like my unskilled 14yo daughter could get a job easier than me.
and there is so few to apply for. I mean heaps if I was a truck driver or a diesel mechanic, but not as many in retail which is really the most likely sector for me to get a job in around here.
I have got a town with a couple of dozen shops and somehow I need to make them advertise 4 jobs a fortnight! 2 of them this week require me to habd my resume in in person. Out of printer ink so that isnt happening anytime soon. Now I need to report the jobs I have applied for to both my JSA and Centrelink where as before it was just my JSA and she has been on holiday for the last 2 weeks.
BR, is there a reason you're on NSA and not parenting payment? i honestly can't remember if there was a reason, given the age of your youngest.
given the limited amount of work available locally, if your partner is on parenting, would it be better to swap over?
if you need to print your resume, can you take it to the job service provider?
if you've been on newstart more than 13 weeks (from memory) you should be able to report via self service and then only show c'link your job seeking efforts at your 6/12 weekly personal contact interviews
I'm sorry to hear that BR. That is seriously ***** house. If you haven't already - perhaps try areas outside direct customer service but opportunities that have an element of customer service or perhaps training roles within customer service environments.
I feel your pain - i'm having difficulties finding a job back in Brisbane - really frustrating. And after 6 years of study - and 4+ years of experience in the field, no one wants to hire me! It's really crap.
Not to mention the blow to your confidence - so keep your chin up mate.. i'm keeping my fingers crossed that something appears for you soon
DH and I have discussed swapping me back to PPP because there is a decent load of manual labour work he can do, but he has the age barrier that might cause him problems getting a job too. =( I wasnt actually meant to end up on NSA. I was on Austudy and have been following a track to get my qualifications for the job I want to do. Before I signed up for the course I am on I called CL to make sure it was Austudy approved and was told it was. Wasnt until the cross over between my HSC and my second course ended that I find out it wasnt. Figured I would find a job anyway. Ha. I was not planning on starting my bachelors until 2011. It was all planned so that phoebe would be close to starting school by the time I had finished mine.
The best way to find work is to talk to local business owners. They talk to each other and that's how work is found. Cold canvas and put yourself out there by talking to people. You'll need to get your resume printed.. do you have a career development centre in your area? They're linked to local development boards or councils..
Your local public library should have PCs and networked printers that you can use at a low cost per printed page. Also, the librarian should be able to point you in the direction of some job skills services in your area (unless that's what you mean by JSA?). It sounds to me like your resume needs a good working over, try a skills based resume and not a chronology based one. I had a patchy job history and the skills based resume got me happily back into the workforce.
