Can you 'wear' a baby that has a hip harness?

DD has just been diagnosed with hip displaysia and will need to be fitted with a harness soon but we don't know how long for.

She has not taken to my close carrier, ring sling or baby bjorn, except for about 10 mins at a time in the BB and 5 at a stretch in the RS. I wonder if her hips were actually causing her discomfort in them. Anyway, as she gets older, stronger I was wondering if anyone knows if babies in a hip harness can be worn in any way or will be just be waiting until the harness is off to try again?

Yes you can, dd1 had hip displaysia and was more than happy to be in her ring sling with her brace on. Maybe try different positions, dd would be off to one side not in the middle of my chest.

That's great to hear BR, I will need to head to my local wearing group so they can show me how

Dusty have you popped into the hip displaysia support thread? You may get some more advice and encouragement from the Mums in there.

One of the mums in my my used an ergo with the new insert for her dd. Worked a treat for them. Hope you are able to work something out.

Thanks MF I've found the thread
Rufi that's great. I'd planned to get an Ergo before this happened. I'll see if I can borrow one to try it out. Xx

Yep - you certainly can wear with a brace hon - you are just limited to carries and carriers that maintain the correct hip position. Pop into babycarriersdownunder, or look through thebabywearer in the special needs section and I'm sure there'll be someone who can give you some advice. From what I understand though - you can wear as long as you are careful to maintain a correct hip position - so a wrap may be a good thing (not sure what carries would be best), or a ring sling in cradle or buddha position (which is basically a seated position).

My dd had ddh and I used a hugabub and then an ergo. Both worked well and I had no issues at all with using with brace, we had a Denis brown brace and I think was more comfortable for her in the carriers than in the pushchair for the months had brace on.

I think the reason the ergo worked so well for them was cause of the way the new infant insert works, like suse mentioned, i think it does create a sort of little seat... (But I dont know what kind of brace she had....) So make sure that when you borrow one, you get the right insert...

DD didn't fit into the baby bjorn, but did in slings - but she was never a fan of them anyway, before or after brace.

Talk to your physio when the harness is put on, we were actually recommended and encouraged to use a carrier like the bjorn's as it helped to promote the hip flexation that they were artifically creating for him. He found it a lot more comfortable that way then in the pram and car seat. So long as whatever carrier you choose to use doesnt squish their knees together (I think thats what she told us - its been a while) but definately keeps the correct positioning of the hips, you can use whatever carrier you and your DD find most comfortable.
