Usually my experience with interviews is pretty general - the same mostly applies to all.
Around the end of August I applied for a job as a Training Consultant for a worldwide legal and corporate resource firm. Something that just tickles my fancy in a big way.
Anyway - I got a call about a week into September - the guy running the show had just come back from holidays. So I had almost forgotten about it.
Anyway he calls me to do a phone interview (job is in Brisbane, and he's located in Perth). He's the training co-ordinator (amongst other roles) and he manages the national team. Our interview went really well - great guy to chat to. Was really impressed with me, and was going to call his boss and tell him to call me direct (national sale manager, whom he reports). Weeks go by, nothing. Then i get a random call from some guy from the same company who works in the Barrister's segment, whom the successful person will co-ordinate with a fair bit - and he conducts a more "legal" interview with me. Then I get a call from the original guy - wondering if i had heard from his boss, to which i reply - no.
Long story short - i never hear from the first guy's boss but he's since called me to see if I would be willing to meet with a different guy when i'm in sydney soon for my college exams as their head office is in Sydney.
After all this stuffing around - effectively 6 weeks - i'm happy to go and see them because i've gotta see this thing through lol But i asked him - "when do you think you might make a decision" and he's replied "well, we're basically keeping the job open for you". He then went on to say that there's other people they can talk to but they are waiting it out to see how it concludes with me when I come and see this other guy. He mentioned the reason they want me to meet this other guys is to test my ability to show someone what I know - or train someone about something I know. See how I adapt and how I deal with teaching people technological systems etc. Understandable. But again, don't really know what to make of that either!
Sorry for the long story - but out of context wouldn't make much sense.
So what does "we're keeping the job open for you" really mean? It sounds pretty promising to me, but I don't want to get my hopes up - because I think i'll naturally be pretty peeved if after all this, I don't get an offer. I'm slightly frustrated and anxious. And although I don't want to hurry my exams up - I do want to hurry up and get to Sydney to meet with these peoples.
It sounds to me like they like you for the job on paper, but they want a face to face interview to confirm their decision. Although I don't think it's fair on you to keep you waiting so long.
