    Health nurse need advice

So my horrible mchn is gone have a new one who is younger and seems sensible ...... But not sure about some of her advice, ds has a cold and is coughing in his sleep and getting tired during feeding. We struggle with his weight at the best of times but he put on 130g in 12 days.

Her advice was to give him panadol so he sleeps better and the bf's better. Seems odd to me would rather do top ups or more feeds.

That is odd advice....Wouldn't panadol make him even more drowsy during feeding?

The only reason I can think of for her to suggest it is if he has a sore throat that is making him unwilling to feed. Is he snuffly? Maybe putting some saline drops in his nose to thin mucous and make it easier for him to breathe and therefore feed or even a humidifier might work.

Sleep can help bub gain weight. Massage can also help gain weight.

Not sure about the panadol thing.

Thought it was another odd one. Have used the saline, he has no fever or runny nose just a cough and he sounds a bit blocked. Thanks girls, I know not to listen to them in general but sometimes it's best to check with the bb girls!

My gp also recommended pain relief when dd had a cold as a young bub. But he saw her throat looked red and sore and she was breast refusing because sucking obviously hurt.

Thanks Arcadia, she didn't check his throat at all which is why I am not happy about following her advice, it came across as knock him out with drugs to help me not ds.

I would take him to the GP to get his throat checked before going down the path of Panadol, especially as she didn't even look at his throat.

Off more feeds if you can to keep him hydrated as well

    Take care xxoo

He had his needles yesterday and he was coughing while we were there. Turns out it's related to his acid reflux and not a cold! Just as well I didnt dose him up on panadol.
