    Moving from NSW to QLD....

So DH has applied for a job in QLD. *if* he got it & we moved.. How would the kids transfer over?
So it would be with the new school year which I would have going into yr1 & another going into yr3 in NSW.. But Im confused as to how it works in QLD. SIL's DD is also in yr 2 in QLD BUT from what I can understand Evan has actually done 1 more year of "School" then her... So would that mean he would go into yr 4?

I think it's been standardised recently, FJ. So they now have Prep (our Kindy) before Year 1, where they never used to in Qld. They should go straight into the new year as they would have started here. Not sure if age cut offs would be different for starting school.

Yeah its really confusing.. talking to SIL it sounds like Prep is voluntary & you don't have to send your kids to Prep & that it is "play based" not official school KWIM?

    Education facilities in Queensland

Prep is not compulsory. Age cut offs for prep are the same as in NSW, five by June 30.

So does that mean what they do in year 1 in QLD is what we do in kindy here? This is where I am confused. From what I am reading on different forums & stuff (just googling) Yr1 in QLD is learning the basics for reading/writing etc which is everything my Kindy boy is doing now. So if we did move & he went into year 1 as normal wouldn't he basically be repeating what he just did?

We moved from QLD to NSW last year and DS went straight into the same class, pretty sure it's all the same now. I have a friend in QLD with a DD who is 3 months younger than our DD and they are both starting prep/kindy next year.

Students are eligible to enter the first year of secondary school, Year 8, after completing seven years of primary education. Parents may enrol a child in their local secondary school by contacting the school directly.
See this also, say we did move.. Primary school is up to yr 7 in QLD. SO according to the above statement My boys would be eligible to enter yr 8 when they have completed yr 6. As both boys would have already done 7 years of primary education, having done kindy here KWIM? Seems Prep isn't part of the primary school edu in QLD. So here its Kindy to yr 6 then highschool. QLD its yr 1 to 7 then high school in yr 8...

So really my kids will do a whole year more of school if we move & they are put int he same grade they would be here in NSW... This is where I am confused.

I am prettu sure they would just go into the grade where they fit age appropriatly.. My son who was 5 in August starts school next year. when my eldest started schol he went to Preschool at aged 4.5 and is now in yr 6. If they had prep in when he was to start he would only be in yr 5 now...

Maybe ring a school close to where you are looking to live to clear up any confusion

Prep/kindy whatever you want to call is definitely in QLD now across all public schools, was only introduced a few years ago but DS was in prep in QLD while we were there. I think it really comes down to age, maybe call a school in the area you're looking to move to?

FJ, even in NSW year 7 isn't really classed as high school anymore apparently, but 'middle school' which is years 5-7, but mostly years 6 and 7. This is because in year 7 they still run a set curriculum with no elective subjects chosen till year 8, so even though in QLD year 7 is still primary school the level of education is still the same. I would say that he would still follow his current school year when you move.

Prep is across the board in QLD schools but its not the compulsory first year of school. Yr 1 is.

Both my boys are August babies so where both 5 turning 6 when they started... As long as they don't "repeat" a year Im fine.

I will call up if DH gets called up for an interview.. Chances are he wont seems we are interstate.

eta - so My kindy going into yr 1 boy is 6, turning 7 next yr (yr 1) & my other is 8 turning 9 next yr (yr 3). .
