    Cost of mirena

Is it on the PBS list for use as a contraceptive? I've heard different answers on this so was hoping someone who has had it in recently might know?

I think it cost me $65? That was a while back and we don't have a health care card or anything like that.

Old thread I know, but it is on the PBS. Mine cost $30 or $35 from a pharmacy.

Most of the cost might be getting it put in, depending on who does it. You need to see a GP first and then be referred to a gynaecologist (unless maybe you already see a gyno). In my case I went to a bulk billing GP and then to a gyno at the hospital so it was all free, but I did have to wait about six weeks to get in for an appointment at the hospital. Private gynos would see you faster but charge for it.

yep mine was around $30-35, it is subsidised by the government. it cost more to have inserted but well worth it!
oh and i had my GP/Ob do it as he is qualified

Is it true you can only get it done between day 5-7 of your cycle?
I have to go on a Saturday because of work and finally found a couple of gyn's I could go to only to be told by a gp that it's unlikely I can choose when I have it done because it's all
Down to timing and my cycle?

Normally what happends is the first appt is you get the script, pregnancy test and swab to check for any signs of infection.
Then another appt to get the Mirena inserted. I was BF when I had mine in and it was also at my 6-8wk check I got things rolling.
There was no mention of timing only that she was pleased I hadn't had an AF since my initial bleeding after birth as she explained it would help with the settling in period.
Wear a liner to the appt for the after bleeding you may get. They will probably offer you one anyway.

I had mine inserted on about cycle day 30, but I had to have a pregnancy blood test done to make sure I wasn't pregnant. (Definitely tell the truth about what cycle day you are on though: you really don't want to have to deal with having to decide what to do about a pregnancy with it in.) I think they were pretty sceptical of me: my cycles are normally shorter than that. But I wasn't pregnant.

With regard to the appointments, I only had one with the gyno and then one checkup. My GP did a Pap smear, wrote the referral and did an STD test. (It's also not a great thing to have it put in if you have certain STDs.) Then I went to the gyno at the hospital and they did the pregnancy test there and had me wait for the results, although they did consider having me go home and ring them when my period came instead. But a fast test is easier at a hospital because they can do the test in an hour if they have to. And then 4 weeks later I had a checkup and the gyno said it was well placed and to go to the GP as a first step if there are any problems or I want it removed.
