Putting ds into a toddler bed

Hi all. At what age did u transition your child from cot to toddler bed? Ds is 16 months old and we're thinking about whether we transition him to a bed in time for number 2's arrival or leave him in the cot. He will be almost 2 when cupcake is born.

My DD1 is still in a cot we are thinking of getting her a big bed after christmas so she will be nearly 2 and a half. I just bought a second hand cot when DD2 came along as I wasnt ready for DD1 to go into a bed yet

We took one side off our son's cot a few weeks ago at about 2 1/2. Both sides come off to convert it to a toddler bed but we figured it looks more like his cot this way and the transition was more gentle.

He has handled the change beautifully and generally still stays in bed even if he's struggling to get to sleep- just calls out for us. But he getsup in the morning and comes in to wake me up which is lovely I'm glad we didn't try younger, I think it may have been more work and wouldn't have been ready. Personally if I had children closer together I'd get a second cot, or at least a cradle to give you more time to have the older one in their cot.

We did it last week, DD is 18 months old. We did it because she has been having a horrid time sleeping and became a bit anti-cot (would get rigid in my arms even while asleep if she knew she was going in), so we converted the cot to the bed. She's still having a horrid time sleeping, but at least she's sort of willing to get into it now. Cutest thing is that at night she still hasn't worked out she can get out, so sits up and cries for me to go and get her.

DS was 22 months old when he went into a toddler bed, DD1 was 14 months old, and DD2 will probably be around 18ish months cos we'll need the cot by then.

We put DD1 in at 14 months and DD2 in at 16 months. It was easier with DD2. We put a gate on the door when DD2 started getting out of bed regularly. We shut her door overnight (she wakes up DD1 otherwise). It took a week but now she doesn't get out when going to sleep so we took the gate off. She slept fine in the bed from the first sleep in it. Good luck with whatever you decide. I found it just fine with both girls and it was nice not having to lift them in and out of the cot anymore

Exactly the same. DS1 is still in his cot. It was nice not having him getting up at night while we were getting used to having a new baby around.

We moved DD when she was around 15 mths in preparation for DS being born, we had the bed in her room and she transitioned day sleeps herself and then night a few weeks later. DS is 2 and still in there, he sleeps super well so we are reluctant to move him and mess up what is great but having said that we are finding him more and more frequently with his legs hanging out of the cot rails so are thinking it will probably come soon.

    Good luck!

Em's big bed is arriving tomorrow!!! She seems pretty ready...plus I asked pinky McKay at the baby expo and she suggested it to help our sleep problems I was going to leave her cause she doesn't try to get out. She just needs more room now.
