Hi I have a 10 month old DD that I BF till 9 months. I had to stop because she got sick at 8 months and lost over 500gms (she was 6kg at the time so a dramatic loss) We found she wasnt able to put any weight back on so had to put her on Lactose free formula (I was supplimenting till she started refusing the breast) Any other formulas make her throw up. At her last pead app last she had lost 200gm in a week (had finally reached 7kg) so now he thinks it possible she has Coeliac disease as well as lactose intolerance. sorry for the long story but does anyone else have a child with this
I'm pretty sure Coeliacs can be diagnosed through blood tests. I'm a bit surprised that Coeliacs has been brought up so soon. How often have you changed formulas?
they are looking at that because of family history and it looks like its repeating. My sister was and she was not much older when they found it with her. I cant ask her about died and stuff because she died at 20 I was 11 and cant remember any of that part
I don't but my BF's little brother was recently diagnosed. He is in his teens.
In many instances, pead's will refer to a gastroenterologist who will perform a gastroscopy for an official diagnosis. This is a very quick proceedure done under anesthetic for children. It will take about 20 min to complete. It is a day procedure.
My son is lactose intolerant and did the breast refusal too. Goats Milk formula worked well with him - dunno why, there is still lactose in goats milk, but it did. He is now 6 and is on a gluten free dairy free diet. He refused a lot of foods over the years and it turned out he knew his little body best.
My mum has told me everthing she knows from then but as it has all changed and become easier to get gluten free what she knows is very outdated and even she knows that. Thanks for replying
The good news is that your baby isn't lactose intolerant. Lactose intolerance in babies is extremely, extremely rare. A baby with lactose intolerance would not tolerate bm or any other milk from birth and would be very, very ill. Most likely there is another food sensitivity issue - perhaps coeliac - and the damage this is doing to the gut is causing secondary lactose intolerance. There is a very good article about lactose intolerance here - Australian Breastfeeding Association - Lactose intolerance and the breastfed baby. Coeliacs I know less about so I'm not sure if it could be diagnosed in a baby so young. I am wondering though if there was any connection between starting solids or one particular type of solids, and the problem starting.
Usually with food sensitivities (allergies and intolerances) a dietician who specialises in them or an allergist is the best place to start. Like any specialised area, a GP will only know all the ins and outs and latest info if he/she deals with it a lot or has a special interest in it. One general practice doctor just can't know everything.
Best of luck with it hun. It sounds very difficult for you atm.
