    Saline Rinse - FTW!

I have the flu. Yep the one that comes with the shakes, fevers, sweating and chills at the same time. The one that you get dizzy whenever upright....

My throat feels like razor blades and my sinus' feel like there is a ton of cement in them....

I bought a saline rinse off advice from the lovely Rouge around 6 weeks ago when I had sinus issues that nearly led to an infection & the saline rinse was awesome.

So.... I have the flu and yesterday did the saline rinse once because I felt awful. Today, when I woke up I could hardly see because my face was that swollen.... I used the saline rinse and.... *TMI warning* the cement type stuff all came out!!

With the saline rinse you make up around 180mls (not exact, remember I can barely think atm) of warmed filtered water with a saline satchet. You then put the bottle up to one nostril and flush and the gunk comes out the other nostril!! Its pretty gross....

I've done 2 rinses today and both times have felt so much better and my throat doesn't hurt as much already. I was contemplating going to the GP but there isn't much they can do for the flu unless they think its swine flu... I can't drive anyway and I've slept most of yesterday and today.

I'm sorry to hear you're feeling so yuckky, tho the rinses sound like they are doing a world of good.

BTW, I am confused by your use of FTW..what does that mean?

You know that used to have special porcelain pot/jug things especially for this in Victorian times... lol. Although I think people have been doing this for centuries

ETA - I just went to look for a pic of an old one (cos I think they are funny) and had to stop when I saw this term.

LMAO.... nasal douche.... that is the term I will use from now on!!!

Yep, stupid flu.... I can't believe it. I'm always saying to DH, its not the flu, you wouldn't be up and moving if it were... and now I've spent the most of the past 48 hours in bed, and the ones out of bed have been laying on the lounge because it hurts to sit up, or in the shower sitting on the floor. I can't believe how much the flu hurts. The whole body pain associated with it. I couldn't sleep last night, tossed and turned and sweated and froze.... horrible horrible night. I slept well today though. after neurophen, 3000mg Vit C, Zinc, Echinacia, and the nasal douche.

    ETA: Marydean FTW=for the win!

Yeah unfortunately I haven't gotten off that easy.... last night at 2am (or should I say this morning?) I woke up with both my ears blocked and burning. I sat up to releave them & it didn't work... so I went and did a nasal douche thinking that would help, but it didn't. So I took some panadol and some bisolvin to help break down the mucous and tried to get back to sleep. At 5am I got up because I was in too much pain... I paced the house, jumped in the shower and found that nothing was helping... I started to get anxious because I couldn't hear anything out my left ear and my right ear has reduced hearing as well. I phoned a taxi as I couldn't drive (was way too disoriented and dizzy) and went to a medical clinic that was open 24 hours. The GP said that my glands where your tonsils would be (mine have been gone almost 30 years now) were so swollen and full of pus, my ears were red and my ear drums were bulging.... she said that my ear issues were because of the pharyngitis and the swollen glands closing off the eustation tubes. She put me on hardcore antibiotics and ear drops to help relieve the pain. She said to only eat and drink cold things today and use an ice pack on my neck in order to reduce the swelling of the glands. I've tried everything but its 8pm and my ears are still blocked, painful and I'm really wanting to shove a needle in my ear drum to relieve the pain!!! I've taken neurophen and panadol every few hours and tried cold, heat, steam and saline flushes to no avail..... I'm exhausted and going insane.... woe is me.....

    oh hun!

I think you need something stronger than Panadol. Hope those AB's kick the crap out of this, and SOON.

They're also known as Neti Pots. My DH has been using them for a few years for sinus problems.

I hope you're feeling better real soon
