    Camping Must-Haves

We're off camping next weekend (Friday night, saturday night come home Sunday).

I'm worried I'll forget to pack something. Last time we went camping all we could think we forgot was a can opener..

Coz I'm packing the car this time, I'm worried I'll forget something, or some food item.

So. What do you take camping and what food do you take?

There is a basic list in my first post in The Camping Thread, as far as equipment goes....if I knew how to link to that I would, but I think you've posted in there. I'm not sure about food, but the girls in there would know for sure!

ETA - Sorry, just saw that you're already chatting away in there!

    Items

Tent: with the tent a bag of everything that is needed to put the tent up, including extra ropes, different types of pegs, mallet/hammer.

Make sure you have sufficient mossie netting.

    Essential implements
    can opener
corkscrew/bottle opener (they're great for making holes in things if you need it)
cooking utensils, like egg lifter, tongs, oven mits, kitchen paper
things to cook in, including if you have it those funky grate things for toast
kindling and fire starting equipment including paper (have both matches and lighters)

    Extra rolls of toilet paper
mossie spray, citronella candles/flares, fly spray (for in the tent and the "windows" - spray before dusk, close up the tent)
    bedding

    food:
work out a menu plan if possible,
toast/bacon/eggs/beans for breakfast - you can also make damper instead of toast
lunches can be light and you won't need to cook
dinner - make sure it is something that you can cook in the dark if you need to

also have something "spare" that you don't need to cook in case of rain and the fire going out

I make extra while I am cooking dinner in the week before we go camping - like when I am having casseroles, I make double and freeze half in a container. We take the containers of frozen food away with us and it works great for a number of reasons - it cuts down on how many smaller items you need to take because you have complete meals, everything is already cooked so it cuts down on food prep time and stewing time using less gas (or whatever your camp stove is powered by) and it means we don't have to buy ice because we have a few large ice blocks of frozen food in our esky giving us more space for other things. We just take it out of the esky around lunch time and let it defrost somewhere in the shade until it is time to almost eat and then we just heat it through on the stove. Makes life so much easier!

I have to go and change a nappy, BBL ...
