New Job... Huge Mess... What now?

    Okay so long story...

Husband went for job interview, got offered the job, accepted the job via email (as requested by company), was told to hand over signed copy of contract at induction which was to be on the 19th...

Phone call prior to 19th and their IT department hadn't put him in the system yet and it would take 2 weeks to complete everything so wouldn't be able to do induction until the following week so they said they would pay him from the 19th until the induction (1 week away).

Day he is due to fly out to go to induction gets a phone call saying as he is the only person doing the induction it's not going to happen and that they would need to look down the track of him being a "contractor" until he can complete an induction.

A week later... Come back and say no sorry we can't afford contractor rates and there is not going to be another induction until January so we are going to have to cancel your contract and the HR department will be in touch once they have gone over what has to happen now...

So from our understanding... he gets paid from the 19th until now... possibly a months notice worth of wages???

He has gone for interviews this week due to the fact he felt that the contract would fall through... looks like he has two job offers coming in over the next few days...

Where do we stand with his "first" job... does he have to wait until he gets his official "notice" before he accepts the next job? Will that affect the months notice worth of wages if he is getting it?

Where do we stand :-( so much stress...

In NZ we had citizens advice which we'd be able to call but have no idea where to go to from here in Oz... we have no money to pay lawyers

I'd imagine that as he hasn't handed in a signed contract, that he's not obliged. However, he did accept by email, so I'm not sure.

If I was him, I'd accept one of the other jobs, assuming they have an earlier start, pay etc is good. Then let the other company know that as they have mucked him around, he can no longer work for them. Without a signed contract, notice is 2 weeks.

    GL - they sound disorganised/dodgy

I am no lawyer, but even though there is not a signed contract there certainly appears to be a verbal one. There has certainly been 'offer and acceptance'. I would really be looking at getting some legal advice to ensure that you get your full entitlements.

I'm from NZ also so not fully across how it works here, but are you able to contact legal aid and talk to someone?
