    Croup

    Hi all,

DD has croup I'm a bit worried because she's now had it for 3 days and it's not improving (if anything I think it's the same!). I went to the GP on Wednesday and they gave me some steroids to give her at night time to help her lungs and keep her airway open by reducing the swelling.

I have an appointment for her with our GP tomorrow afternoon, but I don't know if I'm being a worry wart? She seems scared to go to sleep and doesn't sleep for longer than 10 or 20 minutes at a time before the rasping and coughing (well, it sounds like 'seal barking' or 'owl hooting') begins.

I know it's a virus and there's really nothing they can do but make her comfortable, but the GP said not to give her the medicine for more than 3 days and tonight is the last dose. He said it would improve but it's not and she is so sleep deprived and unhappy.

I was home with her yesterday and DH is home wth her today because there was no way I was sending her to daycare.

But I guess what I'm asking is has anyone else's child had croup and how did you manage it? I try not to panic when she starts gasping but it's horrible and I really just want to fix it, even though I know I can't.

    Any advice/experiences welcome

    Thanks

We've found that usually the 2nd night is the worst and by the third night they've turned a corner. I hope you're all able to get some sleep tonight. It's worrying when they're coughing and fighting to breathe. *hug*

croup is horrible my DS used to get it all the time. I used to put DS in a steamy bathroom when it flaired up but he has astma too so we usually ended up at the hospital. I hope your DD is better soon.
