    4th day of fever!

So I took DS up to the doctor on Tue as I was a bit too worried to wait. He hadn't been eating anything apart from dry finger food and refusing the bottle so he only breast fed and I do not have much of a supply anymore.
He had a rusty colour to his wee and so they thought it was a UTI.
He has been on antibiotics since Tue afternoon and I have seen no improvement!
He didn't sleep at ALL yesterday and we were up all night with him.
His temp got to 39.7 then after the nurofen went back to normal.
So he has been taking nurofen for 3 days now and still the fever comes back every 6 hours.

I am starting to get very worried but the doc's can't seem to figure out what is wrong.

Should I just take him to the hospital, I am just so worried and want my little happy cherub back!

Yep, I would definitely be taking him to the hospital, the antibiotics should have made SOME difference by now, and I don't think its good to be constantly on Nurofen. Poor little chicken

I would take him back, quite possibly they will prescribe different antibiotics to help him kick the infection

Definitely take him back. I hope they can figure it out soon

I'd take him back, sounds like he needs some different ABs to help get rid of whatever is going on.

Let us know how you go

I'd be taking him back to the doctor as well.

When I had DS the midwives at the hossy told me the rusty stains in his nappy are called urates (I think?) and can be a sign of dehydration.
What is his output like - Normal number of wet and dirty nappies?
Is the inside of his mouth wet?

Both my boys had a similar thing about a year ago, five days of high temps, were on AB's but they didn't help, the Dr said it was more likely a viral infection and not bacterial so the antibiotics wouldn't do much. We had to keep the temps down by rotating panadol and nurofen, it was the only way we could keep the temps down. I actually took them both to the hospital when their fevers were 40.2, it's really scary to see them so unwell. I would be going back to the dr and making sure there's nothing else going on, or up to the hospital if their fever is very high and they are showing signs of dehydration. Hope he turns a corner soon!

definately take him back. AB's take around 24hrs to work but you should see improvement after that. The fact his uring is still rusty and he's still having fevers needs to be considered. Did they send off a wee sample? Did they call with the results? My DD had a UTI when she was little and we started a course of AB's only to be called and asked to collect a new prescription as the pathology showed the strain of UTI she had developed was resistant to the AB's she was originally prescribed.

The bottles for panadol and neurofen say that the person should seek medical advice if they are required for longer than a period of time (24 or 48 hours). So if he is still having fevers and requiring that medication, get him checked out.

Thank you so much everyone for your great advice.
I took him up to the gp this afternoon and one look at him and did his temp 40.2, we were off to hospital.
I was still not sure what was wrong and the doctor had a look at him and said he has a viral infection and has swollen tonsils and red ears. So the AB's wont really help it out any.
Just have to keep giving him AB's till he feels better. So after all that at least we know pretty much what it is. She told me to do another wee sample just incase as UTI's can spread to the kidneys very fast in babies!

Anyway I am a bit grumpy at the GP for not noticing anything when she looked about half an hour before arriving at hosp! I pay so much money for them to say there is nothing we can do, I hope he feels better!!!

Poor little one. Hope he's feeling much better very soon. What a PITA that GP didn't notice anything.
