    Pessaries vs Crinone

    Hi

Just wondering if anyone has used either or both and has had good or bad experiences with them?

I was under the impression that crinone was more popular to be used in the 2WW but when I have used it before but had problems with it umm......not coming back out (sorry thats way TMI).

This cycle my nurse said I could try the pessaries but I wasn't sure either way.

    Thanks for any help

I used crinone and it was gross. But I hear the pessaries are too!

The preference lies with your FS xxx

I think crinone is more effective compared to pessaries especially if the pessaries are used vaginally. At my clinic they now do pessaries rectally and have had better results with maintaining progesterone levels.

I have normally used crinone in the 2WW and then pessaries when pg. Actually last cycle I used both until 13 weeks pg to ensure my P4 levels stayed up but I think that was unusual (2 crinone and 8 pessaries a day!).

Crinone is absorbed more fully into the uterus and may not show up as high on the blood tests which can cause some people to worry but it is quite strong. Both have side effects but I think the crinone is more iterating on the cervix and can cause some brown discharge.

I can recommend the pessaries rectally as you are sure they have stayed in longer (ie don't leak like they do vaginally) and absorbed more. That said after using them until 13 weeks pg they irritated my bowel too.

Well that is probably TMI but I took a ridiculous amount when pg with my DD so got to know them both well.

I used pessaries with all my cycles during my first STIM cycle and i didn't like them, my body didn't really absorb them and by my last FET i was on 4 a day! and still had a low progesterone level. You also have to lay down for half an hr after inserting them morning and night and it does come out. For this STIM im on crinone, i havn't started using it yet but im hoping i will get better progesterone levels this time, but don't let this worry you as it could just be my body that dosn't absorb it very well?

I've used both - crinone for fresh transfers, pessaries for frozen - I've never asked why they do it that way - maybe since the crinone has an applicator it's better if you're 'sensitive' after a collection! - pessaries are a lot cheaper, both can be messy. I think they're meant to be equally effective, but like everything else different people respond differently - my last level was 105 from one daily at the end of tww (pessary)

    Hi

Thanks so much for the information!!!!!

My FS has said I can use either.....I have heaps of left over crinone from a cancelled cycle so I guess I can switch if the pessaries aren't working properly.

When did you start your progesterone support, was it after EPU or after transfer?

Thankyou thankyou thankyou so much for your responses!

I checked with my FS and am using crinone in the morning and pessaries at night and it seems to be going ok so far! He said it was fine as long as I was consistent, it also means I don't have to lie down for 30 mins during the day. I just don't think I could have coped with 2 crinone a day like last cycle, was so irritated inside, it was horrible I think my poor vaj was a crinone storage facility.

Possums come join us in the TWW thread (and anyone else who wants to aswell)

Aimee, the crinone is gross, I agree. I spoke to the nurses in our clinic though and they all said to have a..... *ahem*.... "clear out" every couple of days or so..... this seemed to work well for me

I used Crinone for my fresh cycle only and pessaries for my frozn cycles, although this last cycle they ran out of pessaries for about 5 weeks so I had to switch to crinone (I was taking until I reached 10 weeks). Who knows if the crinone helped both embryo's stick or not???? Once I was back on the pessaries I started inserting them rectally as I had a UTI for about 4 weeks and the leakage from using them vaginally would iritate the UTI even more. Oh, plus the pessaries are heaps cheaper than the crinone.....

The crinone does leave a "cottage cheese" residual and I found every couple of days in the shower I had to had a clean out - not pleasant but if I didn't do it can you imagine how much would be up there after 5 weeks .
