I think you should be fine, the body manages to clean out any foreign stuff with secretions -- ps another reason I hate tampons.
This morning the cover must have come off the top of the tampon - when I pulled it out there was cotton wool everywhere. How do I know it all came out? Do I need to be checked?

i know it sounds gross but have a bit of a feel with a finger inside. just incase there is a bigger piece you can just wipe out.
not had this happen but I have had a string break loose from it while I was removing it.... That was simply the grossest thing I have ever had to do. NOW what I did was take that feeling and write the manafacturer a letter. I got $10.00 and 3 boxes of tampons in the mail.... LOL
Your body will expel anything it doesnt want, but I would have a "feel" just in case.
Sorry, but I have to disagree. Unfortunately the body doesn't always get rid of everything. My mum went to the gyno because she started getting a weird smell from 'down there' that was getting worse from day to day. Turns out one of her tampons had broken and some 'bits' where left behind...(they discovered this two weeks after her period) Her doctor said she was very lucky they discovered it, because she was starting to get blood poisoning.... So I personally would get it checked out. Rather to be safe than sorry.

If I was in your position I'd have a bit of a check inside with clean fingers and then use pads until the end of my period.
gosh this was a long time ago... how did you go? a similar thing has just happened to me. a little piece of the fabric was sticking out from the outer layer of the tampon. i am wondering if there is a fragment inside still. it would be a tiny piece of thin fabric if it is. !!
oh no that sounds terrible!! starting to freak a bit!! i dont want to go to gp though... embarrassing! especially if its nothing.!!
