Just wanting to ask a question for a freind. My Freinds DD (nearly 10months) isnt crawling yet. She's sitting unassisted. She gets onto her knees and then just flops. She will stand for ages if helped up onto furniture or walker, but hasnt got the stepping movement yet. She has very strong legs, but not very strong arms we dont think. She doesnt roll if put on tummy or back.
She is also a very big girl. Shes 12.5kg as of the other day. prob about 78cm. She doesnt eat excessive amounts (my DD eats way more then what she does) and doesnt get unhealthy foods/drinks.
She is the 5th child (3rd for my Friend, she has two step childern who live with her full time) SDD 12, SDS 8, DS 8, DD 3 and then bub. DD3 walked at 10months. shes tiny now, size 2 bottoms but was 9lb 14oz born. DD is question was 9lb 6oz born.
Shes just concerned that shes not moving yet. Do many bubs skip crawling? I think she might.....shes got the strongest legs!!
I don't have any info in relation to this about my own DD, but I was a large baby myself. I never crawled, just ended up learning how to do a sort of bum shuffle. I skipped straight to walking, but didn't even do that until I was about 17 months! And - as soon as I started walking mybody changed dramatically. I slimmed down so much that even with a nappy on my pants used to fall down!
I think I just found a way to get around that suited me. By all accounts I did not like to be on my tummy, so the bum shuffle suited me. Oh and even though I was a late bloomer in relation to walking it did not have any great effect into the future in fact I ended up as a ballet dancer. I was also more advanced with speech than a lot of baby's my age. I guess we each have an area we excel in from a young age!
Sounds a bit like my Sam. He wasn't quite as big, but at 10 months old he could pull himself up on the furniture and cruise around that way, but couldn't crawl and certainly didn't like to roll much.
But in the end he crawled at 10.5 months, and then walked a week after his birthday.
Some kids just don't feel the need to go places... Can't keep him still now, though!
My DD was a large bub (13kg at 10mths). She had super strong legs - would just stand all day doing squats (not moving anywhere, just up and down ). She started crawling 2 weeks before she started walking - she only ever crawling a handful of times: didn't like the pressure on her knees.
It's not an issue if a baby walks first as long as they can physically crawl before the age of 3. Some babies skip crawling completely but can physically crawl after they walk.
My DS2 had been alot slower at everything then DS1. DS2 only started crawling just before he was 10months old (DS1 was 7months), 1st roll over (back to tummy) was about 6months (DS1 was 3months), then 2nd way (tummy to back) was 7months (DS1 was 4 or 5 months), standing up about 11months (DS1 was 8months) and even though DS2 has begun this week to let go of things...I don't think he'll be walking by or even just after his 1st birthday (DS1 walked at 13months). Even teeth are slow...DS2 still only has his 2 bottom teeth (though top left is sooo close to breaking through...any day now). I always thought DS2 would've been super keen to do all these things with having a brother to watch and chase after, but obviously he is his own person and is just developing in his own time. Maybe he has been just happy to just sit/lay there and watch his 2.5 year old brother being a monkey
I'm not worried though, I know it'll happen eventually (its probably been a good thing as there is one less to chase after....especially out our doggy door ).
Crawling doesn't necessarily mean on hands and knees either. My girl is a bum scooter and really didn't start moving until she was 11 months I think, maybe a little younger.
She is also not trying to stand or walk, we try to encourage her but she is just not interested.
Tell your friend not to worry, maybe her child is busy developing in other areas?
FWIW DD baby cousin is 3 months younger and she is pulling herself to standing and doing amazing physical things that our DD is no where near. BUT our DD's fine motor skills at the same age as her cousin have always been FAR more advanced.
Kids develop at different rates and stages, no two can or SHOULD be compared. I am sure her baby is just fine and if she really looked at her and needed to compare to the other kids then maybe she should take a close look at the areas that the baby has grown in rather than the areas she hasn't.
DD is just over 9 months and isn't making moves to crawl at all yet. I'm not worried. She's waaaaaay more cognitive than physical.
Some babies skip crawling these days anyway - apparently because babies aren't put to sleep on their tummies, babies who actually do properly crawl are rare anyway.
Thanks for all the replies ladies ill have her over later for a cuppa and let her have a read through, Im sure it will put her mind at ease a little. Her DD is such a kind peaceful placid little girl, the complete oppisit of my little monster! sometime i wish i could swap!
