Today DD9 told me she has hair growing on her vagina. I had a look, she has quite a bit of tiny blonde hair, you really have to look closely and two distinctive black hairs about a cm long. I was a bit surprised, I never started growing pubic hair until I was 13. Does this mean her period could start soon? She's still my baby. TIA.
I remember my best friend had pubic hair when she was 9-10 (much younger then me) and didn't get her period until she was 16. I only got pubic hair when I was 11.5 and had AF before I was 12. I think a combination of signs such as hair growth, breast development, body odour etc together would be a better indication of when a period would start then just one thing. It is surprising but isn't it? My DD is 10 and she seems way to young even in 2yrs time its hard to think she could have her period.
Phew, she still freaks out at the sight of blood lol and we havn't talked about menstruation yet so now is a good chance to sit her down and have a little girlie chat I think.
It would be a good time to talk to her about cycles and such Dianne. I remember being so daunted because my period came before the grade 5/6 body talks at school. i was quite freaked out
The Dr said that DD9 is starting to develop breasts so we had a chat about periods, she has 2 older sisters so had a bit of an idea. Hopefully it will still be a while off....
They have to get to a certain body weight to start AF, they usually get hair a few years before AF. DD2 has had some hair there since last year (so when she was 10) but shows no signs of breasts or AF. DD1 got AF at 14.
Just so you know - my DD (8yo) has already started wth pubic hair and breasts. She will be 9 in Feb and has carried a panty liner and pad with a change of underwear for the past 6 months.
I was also able to find a great age appropriate book to help explain all the changes to her body, we normally read it together so any questions she has are answered straight away.
I cried when DD showed me she was growing up. She was so young! (I think) I think training bra's will be bought before the year is out. I consider myself lucky though and she is quite mature about getting a period and talking to me about it.
oh gosh she will start becoming quiet inquisitive now... she is becoming a young lady!!
you must be petrified!!!
just to let you feel like your not alone my little sister whom just turned 11 2 weeks ago , just got her period a month and ahalf before her bday...
im the same as you a late bloomer compared to all these little ones lol
Can I just say that you are all ABSOLUTELY AWESOME MUMS!!! You obviously have great relationships with your daughters and should definately give yourselves a pat on the back.
FWIW my DSD got her first period last year (she had just turned 12). I had noticed a brownish discharge on her knickers when doing the washing - that started a few months before she actually got her first 'proper' period - and broached the subject with her. Libra put out a pad designed for little bods and they have cute designs on the packets - loads better than the giant uncomfortable things my mum got me when I first started. DSD carries a little purse with a couple in it just in case.
