My almost 10 month old bub is getting constipated. She has 8 - 10 breastfeeds a day, and 3-4 overnight (recently cut down from 6). We are doing BLS and she is slowly getting food into her tummy. Prior to introducing solids she was a regular pooper (every day). THis has decreased and yesterday and overnight she had a sore tummy and her poos are quite dry.
She drinks water slowly and dribbles alot so most of her liquid is from breastmilk. She has heaps of BFs, although they are not as productive when she is distracted. Lately she has been eating apricots, pasta with tomato sauce (mainly just the sauce), snow peas, beans, dried fruit, cooked apple, toast.
Are any of these foods constipating? What can i add to her diet to help?
What you are feeding her sounds fine. It might take a while for her body to get used to getting more solids, especially given that she is still getting a lot of breastmilk.
I've found watermelon or peaches/nectarines works for us. If your DD seems in pain and is straining without any result, a little brown sugar in water works a treat to get things moving.
Hi, my little one had a similar problem. The only food on your list that can contribute to constipation (that I'm aware of) is cooked apples. apparently when cooked the pectin in them can make poos get a hard. I gave my bub cooked pears instead of apples, or mixed the two together. Also, you can put a dribble of prune juice into the food (I still do this occasionally, it works a treat). Prune juice can't soften the poo thats already in there, but it does get it moving. One more suggestion for sore tummy... I give my bub a very watered down drink of peppermint tea. Caffiene free of course. This aids digestion. i use it myself too. Hope some of this helps
Thanks for the info, might try some pear instead. She likes watermelon but doesn't eat heaps of it.
I think she might have had a blockage cos she had a couple of very dry poop nappies (lots of grunting and unhappiness) and then 4 more poopy nappies getting more normal each time. It was hot so maybe she was getting dehydrated?
I might ask at chemist about those icy poles (gastrolyte?) and if they ok on hot days if she not drinking enough.
