I feel like I've been trying to find that hair product that works for me for, well decades haha.
I have very thick and pretty coarse and very dark hair, but with lots of greys now, which is why I always colour (call me vain, but 35 is too young to be practically grey!) - in summer it's always frizzy, sometimes even if I straighten it. It has a bit of natural curl to it which means it never seems to sit how I want it to.
I figure the colouring all the time doesn't help anything, and nor would the straightening and is probably why I don't have hair like it was in my teens - not frizzy, back then and no curl. I suppose hair does change with age....
So recently I got sucked in and tried Wen - big waste of money, returned that. Yesterday I bought Argan Oil - today I have horrible oily feeling hair.....
The only shampoo I seem to be able to use is (hides from all hairdressers) Pantene - my hair is probably addicted to it lol.
So anyway, the point of my ramble is - does anyone out there in BB land suffer the same hair affliction and have the hair holy grail that works for them?
I've heard of Moogoo - wonder whether that's worth a try or not?
My hair is very thick. I use the GHD heat protector spray and then run my GHD straighteners through it and finish with moroccan oil. Makes it nice and smooth.
ausgirl my hair sounds exactly like yours!!! A couple of things I found have worked:
1. Always shampoo twice. If you're anything like me, you usually use way too much conditioner- because it's the only way to 'tame' it. But then it goes to the other extreme and become gross and heavy. SO... shampoo once to get rid of the product, and then another time to actually clean your hair/scalp.
2. When you condition, instead of doing it on 'damp' hair, make sure your hair is WET. Don't use too much or it's weigh your hair down instead of making it lovely curls like you want.
3. Stop using Pantene. I know, believe me!!!!! It's so hard to quit it, but the reason it's so good is that it's basically silicone.
4. A brand that is working really well for me is Catwalk by TIGI HEADSHOT. It's the from most hairdressers, expensive, but will last 3 times as long as pantene because you won't use as much.
5. I wash my hair twice a week max and RINSE.
Now, I still don't have perfect hair, it annoys the jeebers outta me sometimes, but those steps have meant that I no longer have product build up on top of frizzy hair. Because I don't have the product build up, I wash my hair less, which helps it stay hydrated. AND I sometimes get that perfect curly day.
Sukin would be good, it is completely natural and restores natural oils to the hair without making it heaps oily.
Basically it would be great for your hair to stop using anything with the really harmful parabens, petrochems etc because they will be ruining your hair, not fixing it. And pantene is coating your hair with sillicone and prevents any nutrients to get through to the hair shaft so that is worse for your hair!!
But if you don't really mind about the chems etc:
Redken is a great brand that is high quality and won't ruin your hair like pantene... So is Wella SP range, they have an amazing heavy hair treatment that did wonders for my dry frizzy hair without oiling the roots... I LOVED it....
Argan oil comes in a spray for after shampoo and conditioner.
I use RPR to wash my hair, then either argan oil spray on the ends only or PPS menz the endz.
there's a moogoo appreciation thread if you'd like to read that lol. I've just started using it and think it 's great and I especially love that it doesn't react with my skin and doesn't add volume to my already thick hair. I also intend to dye my hair with henna and get some of the Argan oil
i use argan oil by only teeny weeny amounts . i have curly boofy hair, really dry on the ends .. and its hard to manage . my neighbour is a hairdresser and says PPS is a good product , REDKEN and PPS are the same comapny .so its pretty much the same stuff ... i have a treatment thats really good , called joico moisture balm, its for dry coarse hair , thick and balmy and it smooths the friizies
i also use a ghd with argan oil as the heat protectant and come out smooth and shiny every time .
the catwalk stuff is good and does last aaaaagggeeees if u buy the whole range its about $150 i think ... shampoo cond. treatment , styling wax etc ..
i also have the most dryest flaky scalp .... i was using NAK but my neighbour said its clearly not doing anything for it ... lol .... she precribed a scalp massage and deep treatment ... a balancing one ...
i have given up on the holy grail for hair .... usally i just pull it back and show my boobs off hoping they look at them and not my stoopid hair
I have similar hair and also have had my hair changing through my life. With curl when born, straight by 7, curls came back with a vengeance at about 14 then I waited for another change at 21 Didn't happen and I have been trying to *work* with curly hair since. I have only really accepted it, it really used to freak me out to realise I was a curly haired person!
Advice from my experience, find a really good hairdresser! In 35 years of getting haircuts I have only found 2 hairdressers who get my hair and they have delivered me such relief! I try to follow their advice about hair care where practical.
That said I agree with krystals advice, I have just discovered the shampoo twice trick and used to be guilty of using too much conditioner. It has made such a difference to turn this on its head!
I also try to avoid towel drying my hair too much and leave it as wet as possible with all the curls in place. It takes much longer to dry but all the curls tend to stay in place much better.
I have also found that I need to swap products and shampoos regularly as my hair gets sick of them and refuses to cooperate. A change usually brings it back into line!
I'm glad you asked this though as I have always wondered what the problem is with Pantene after a hairdresser reeled in horror when I mentioned I used it. I thought he was just trying to sell me his products so was a bit suspicious. (he was not my regular *sent from above* hairdresser, just someone setting my hair for a special occasion.
