    Red face SHROVE TUESDAY - Nom Nom Nom Pancakes

    Today is SHROVE TUESDAY or PANCAKE DAY and i totally forgot til DP mentioned it, i was kicking myself for not buying a pancake mix but realised it doesn't matter as DD2 can't have them anyway.

    So this morning i figured what the hell i used to make pancakes ALL THE TIME so why not today.

    1 cup self raising flower
    1 cup milk (in my case SOY for DD2)
    1 egg

    I also had some apple & blackberry mix (with vanilla, nutmeg & cinnamon) left from last nights dessert (picked from our very own trees) so i added that in.

    Served them up with some leftover fruit mix, a bit of blackcurrant jam and a tiny tiny bit of cream...

    So are you having pancakes today and if so what are you having with them?

    My faves are normally
    * Strawberries & Cream
    * Lemon & Sugar
    * Apple & Cinnamon
    * Banana

    Mmmm hit me with them and do you use another recipe to make your pancakes?

    Ohhhhh thanks for the reminder! We love them here! I never use mix and the recipe I use is rough as, basically S/R flour - maybe 1 cup or so depending how many I want to make, 1 egg, a wee bit of castor sugar and then milk til the consistency is right!! I just add ingredients til it looks right! Mmmmm!!! I love raspberry jam on mine, maple syrup or plain old lemon and sugar!!

    Enjoy!!

    I told DH this morning that the milk runs out today (actually, I was cross at him coz he opened the new milk instead of using the milk that ends today). Then I said, don't worry, I'll make pikelets.

    Are pikelets ok for shrove tuesday?

    Pikelets are just mini pancakes in my opinion

    Traditionally it was the day before Lent:

    The day before the beginning of Lent, when pancakes are traditionally eaten, originally to use up milk and eggs that would otherwise spoil because of not being eaten during Lent

    Just Me....

    It's the last day before Lent when, due to the 40 days of fasting (until Easter Sunday), the early Christians would use up their flour to make unleven bread. Basically so it didnt go to waste.

    Nowadays we do pancakes. A lot of Catholics and Orthodox Christians still practice fasting over Lent so for them it is more symbolic than for the rest of us (I guess).

    Hope this helps!

    I didn't remember either but funnily enough Nate asked for 'canpapes' out of the blue this morning so I made extra and will send with Darcy for morning tea.

    I usually use the same recipe as you ZF with a tablespoon of oil for better consistency and some vanilla, but someone recommended the Pancake Parlour Buttermilk Pancake Mix to me and man it's far better than mine!
    Ingredient list is fairly good too.

    Yay - thanks for the reminder.

    I do savour ones for dinner, i make a white sauce, blend (read hide) some veggies and add it to the sauce and then add tuna and cheese.
    Thin layer between two pancakes or rolled into a pancake

    then if we are still hungry, we have sweet ones for dessert

    Yum - off to the shops shortly to get the bits

    I've made pancakes using a normal pancake recipe but with that egg replacement powder instead of the eggs, turned out great. Go heavy on the egg replacement, though.
