Question Question for those with a child in first year at primary school (prep, reception etc)

    Hi,

Just wondering what is you child doing in their first year of school. Is it mostly play based or less play more work?

I have spoken with two separate people who've mentioned there is far less play than used to be. I am studying teaching and we are learning about play based learning as most important but seems it is not happening.

My DS1 is a April baby and may not be ready for school next year if this is the case so just trying to get an idea of what it is currently like.

    Thanks.

My daughter is in prep this year and it is mostly play based - the play is a lot more focused on the learning side of things though but the activities are very similar to daycare type play.
I know of a few parents in DDs class that were a bit worried about their little ones starting too early - but they have said that they are happy with the way they have settled in.
    Good luck with it!!

Same here on the play based.. It more focused on play learning I suppose.. The games they play revolve around learning numbers and letter and sounds.. If that makes sense..

My son had never been in day care and was only ever cared for on occasion by grandparents. We had a lot of stress last year wondering how he would cope but within the week he settled great. Better then I ever could have hoped for. He loves it now and really looks forward to going to school..

Socially he is also doing well as that was another concern of mine
