    Question What causes fainting?

I fainted today, after a hard days work and a nice hot bath. There was nothing unusual about today, I worked no harder than any other, my bath was the temp I always have it, but I got out of the bath and felt like I was going to barf so I sat down on the floor where it was cooler and thumped on the wall and DH came and I told him "I feel really sick like I was going to chuck" ........ next thing I am opening my eyes and I was face down on the floor ............

I had a late breaky at 11 then had a ham sandwich at 4 ............

The only times I have fainted have been when I have been under extreme illness or stress and the last time I faitned was when I had a flu jab I am terrified of needles

Does anyone know what causes it?

It could be a combination of tiredness/hot bath/beginning of the flu.....or dare I ask could you be pregnant?

    Hi Nae,

I have a history of fainting & my GP said it's because I have low blood pressure. I also used to faint when under stress, like having blood taken or getting a needle (back when I was young lol)

sounds like low blood pressure. Mine is usually quite low but I've had fainting spells a few times and it was very much like you described.

When your not getting enough blood to the brain, you faint. It's your body's way of making sure your head is below your heart so that the blood doesn't have to push as hard to get to the brain. Being hot makes your blood vessel dilate, so If you have low blood pressure already and then have a hot bath, your blood vessels dilate and that combination can cause you to faint. Adding to those two things is standing up quickly, your body doesn't have enough time to compensate and get the blood to your brain quick enough contributing to the light headness and subsequent fainting. Sometimes just the hot bath and standing up too quickly is all it takes for some.

If you feel like you are going to faint you need to put your head below your heart. Either by lying down or putting your head between your legs. (Laying down reduces the risk of injury!) Some people are fainters, they are just more prone to it. But if it's not usual for you then maybe worth mentioning to the dr.
I seem to faint if i am sick and exert myself too much or have codeine!

    Did you hurt yourself?

    Thanks everyone ......

No I didn't luckily as I was already sitting using the bath as a back support there wasn't too far to fall

Traveller - I have been sick for 2 weeks now, started with mastitis and a temp of 39 then I had a cold sore break out up my nose and over my top lip (which I ONLY get when I am extremely run down) then I got his blasted cold that I have not been able to shake. Pregnant I WISH I don't think I am ovulating at all though I do have a bleed I think it may be a fake period (anasomething).

Maybe I just didn't eat enough

I always faint when I am run down, especially after a hot bath for the reasons Junglemum mentioned. It's probably just that. Try to take it easy and if you continue to feel lightheaded then a trip to the GP to check your blood pressure is ok could be worthwhile. Hope you feel better soon

I have fainted once and that was because i hadnt eaten all day when i was 15. And i came very close to fainting many times when i was pregnant because my blood pressure would suddenly drop.

hope you're ok. If its a regular thing speak to your GP.
