    A little sick chook

    Hi all,

My poor wee DS has a cold I think He's been pretty lucky for the last 12 months as he's not really been sick as such, once or twice he had a little cough and a little blocked nose, but nothing major and we didn't even had to go to the doc or have panadol as a day or so later he would be fine. This time, he's been coughing a bit, sneezing and last night we woke up unable to breathe through his nose, he was so distressed! He didn't have a temp, but I still gave him a dose of panadol. My question is, how should I be treating him? Should I take him to the doc? He looks OK this morning, a snotty nose and not much else. He gets 2 bottles of milk a day and this morning he was struggling to drink it as the nose was blocked. Should I be giving him panadol every 4 hours even though he doesn't have a temp?
He had his 12 month needles on the 23 March, could there be a link?

    TIA.

Poor little man. It's awful when they are sick. To me it sounds like a garden variety cold, if there is no fever then I wouldn't be going to the dr unless something isn't sitting right for you. To help him breathe a bit better at night there are a few things you can try - you can slightly raise the end of his cot bed up = just a rolled up towel will do it, helps the mucous run out instead of down. You can put some Vicks on his feet under some socks or sleep suit - some people swear by this! Others put a bit of Vicks on the cot where bub can't reach it. If you have a humidifier/vaporiser that can help as well to keep the air moist. If his nose is super blocked you can get some Fess for kids - it is just saline spray than can help clear his nose out. I wouldn't be giving panadol unless he has a fever but that is just me, we give it once fevers go up higher than 38 and if they seem uncomfortable. Lots of easy foods too - Olive has a recipe about for an awesome chicken noodle soup = great comfort food!

    HtH and it passes soon.

Thanks so much Tanstar! You've given me some great tips. I forgot to put the vicks on so will do it tonight. He still woke up around midnight crying because he couldn't breathe. Poor chook. I'll chase up Olive for that chicken soup recepie! I've noticed he's been coughing a bit more but still no temp, great!

PS I like the 'garden variety' bit! Made me laugh

    Thanks again

If you don't have a humidifier, run a hot shower for a little while until the bathroom steams up and take him in there for a few minutes.

Thanks hannanat, that's a great idea, and our bathroom is so tiny it steams up in no time

Thanks Tanstar for the recepie Sounds super delicious even for non sickies! lol Will be going soon to the supermarket and getting all the goodies for it. Hope I don't stuff it up but it sounds pretty simple to do. Do you think it's OK to add the chilli flakes for a 1 year old?

My kids don't like anything super hot so I put about 1/4 of a teaspoon in - just a quick shake and that's it. You could leave it out and then any adults who want it could add it later. It is deeeelish! We just ate leftovers for lunch!

    Hi ladies,
A quick update and another question DS has improved over the last 2 days, I have the vapouriser going on in his room, I elevated his mattress and I was putting vicks on his feet and a tiny bit on his chest. Well I thought he was getting better, but then he started coughing more and yesterday I took him out for a walk to mums, and the day was so lovely and sunny and hardly any breeze, and then last night he kept waking himself up with this cough. It sounded like that cough you get when you have an itch in your chest or throat, poor poppet. Is there anything I can do for his cough? Still no temp, and he seems happy otherwise. I ended up taking him to bed with me again last night as DF is o/s ATM so we have the bed to ourselves, but I'm dreading another night of coughing. I ended up giving him panadol last night when the coughing wasn't settling. He does spend a lot of the time on our lino floor in the kitchen/dining which is just concrete and he's usually commado crawling on the cold surface. Would that make the coughing worse as his chest is cold?? Any advice would be great
    Thanks
    B xx

Oh i forgot i posted in here Sounds the same as DS he cleared up for a few days and then got a bad cough! Still no temp either. I ended up taking him to the doctors to check him out as i figured 3 weeks of it warrented a visit. Anyways he ended up having a swollen ear drum on the right side and tonisilitis. I thought he would have had a temp with that! anywho the doc said he was fighting it off well but it had gotten to the point where he needed a little help to rid of it.

If you think he may had a sore throat you can add alittle hunny in with some warm water and a splash of lemon juice and get him to have a few sips. Sounds like you are doing everything right though

Hope he is feeling better soon! This time of year alwasy sucks for these kinds of things xoxo
