what do we have to do....

ok so long story short, DH bowel issues.

as a 3yo he was very sick and had to have surgery, cant rememeber the name of the condition but the inside part of where his umbilical cord was wrapped around his bowel and caused meyhem so it had to be fixed, and then about 3years ago he was admitted to hospital with a bowel obstruction and was close to needing surgery but after 3 days they managed to unblock him...

since then he has had to be on a high fibre diet, which isnt a major problem.
he has had to make better choices ie wholemeal bread instead of white, less cheese, minimal nuts, no steak or beef( mince is ok).
he basically needs to have a diet of foods that arnt dense and are easy to digest.

he eats 3-4 peices of fruit a day, vegies we are working on ( thanks to MIL not making him eat them as a kid he thinks he doesnt like them ), has small portions etc....

he has been unable to eat pizza but tried gluten free the other night and has been fine! means i dont have to give up my pizza now!

but we are wondering if he may have irritable bowel syndrom or a gluten intollerance?

how do we go about getting him looked at for these sorts of things?

is it a GP case or will we need a referal to a specialist?
i figure he will need to see a dietitian, which is fine a friend of mine is one of them so thats ok, but yeah what do we do??

its been long enough and i think its time to get it looked at so we know exactly whats going on to make life easier for all of us

It sounds like a condition my grandmother has called diverticulitis syndrome. Her diet sounds very similar to your sons.

I would go back to your GP & get a referral to a bowel specialist to get your son checked out. GP's are just that - general practitioners. Whilst they may have an interest in specific fields, they aren't specialists in them. I found that out when I asked a peadiatrician about my DD haemangiona & he gave me incorrect information. It wasn't until I went to the specialist that he gave me the correct information.

Iv had bowel obstructions caused by adhesions so I really do know how he feels. I had part of my bowel removed as a baby and I got ill at 18. Im still ill now only I have nerve damage caused by adhesions. Your DH needs to see a bowel surgeon and a dietitian might do some good to help him. Take care huni. xxx

I was going to say the same as RhiChiChi. He should be under someone who know how to treat the condition and have regular check ups.
MIL had it, very ill at one stage, but when she stuck to her eating plan she was fine.
Talk to you friend as they will be able to recommend who to see Dr wise

Yes, know all about men & illness.

Go along the lines that there are now more foods he can eat as reseaarch has progressed heaps recently. I know MIL was able to eat some of the banned food without having a flair up
