Good reasonably priced butchers and greengrocers in northern Melbourne

    Hi everyone,

I'm trying to find some good reasonably priced butchers in the northern suburbs so I can stock my freezer that is currently sitting empty. Any reccomendations? Same for good greengrocers as well.

    TIA

You could give the Preston Market a go - heaps of range and good produce.

I used to work in a fruit shop in Greensborough - they'd been in Main Street for 40 odd years, and were almost famous for it. Now they've moved into the bottom level of the centre, but I'm not sure on whether the quality is the same, but they were the best around.

Provincial Meats in Mernda is pretty popular around here, in Plenty Road. It's a wholesale butcher with a big range and the meat is nice.

    Hope that helps

ETA - If you wanted to go a little further, we've been going to Stokes Farm, which is on the Wallan Road in Upper Plenty. They grow most of their own and sell it in a purpose-built shed in the front. Prices are really really reasonable and the produce is lovely. I can get a full to the brim box there for around $30.

Thanks PRMG. I've been to the one in the Greensborough shops, seemed ok, might have to go back. I will try the markets and the butchers. Thanks for the tip

If you go to Preston Markets, best tip is to get there early. I know they're closed some days of the week, I think it's Monday - Wednesday. I remember we went the first time, got there about 11am, couldn't find a car park, couldn't move and only the scraps were left!!!!! They've got a great deli there too, and a guy who makes pasta....oh yum....think I need to go there again.....

On Sydney Road, Brunswick there is a great halal butcher that has amazing meat called "Istanbul Butchers".
I can thoroughly recommend them. (Look out for the turkish sausages - Sucek - yum, yum, yum!!!!)

I only wish I lived closer....

Also, there is a great turkish bakery called A1 bakery....To die for .....

i shop at the above mentioned fruit shop and the quality is great, the price is high mind you, but if im getting good quality friut and veg atm then im happy to pay the $$$ for it....

i second Provincial meats, i go there quite a lot....
    their honey/soy wingettes are AMAZING!!

think i might do a excursion to the preston market again soon, we have friends who own a butcher there and i always forget to go!
